1 Clothing & Families Objectives:
Explain why clothing needs differ among families. Explain how family values affect clothing decisions. Describe tolls and techniques that help families with clothing management. Describe ways families can share clothing responsibilities.

2 Family Clothing Needs Some things never change
Clothing will always be a need for the same reasons Family needs however differ depending on lifestyles and places in which they live Some family needs are individual Dancer Horse back rider Athlete Make a list of your personal clothing needs and any current wants you have for specific clothing.

3 Multiple Roles Teen, sister, daughter, niece, grandchild, student, friend, employee, etc. Multiple roles require different types of clothing Uniforms, casual, dressy, athletic, etc.

4 Stages of Life Family life cycle Beginning years Parenting stage
Can spend more money on self for clothing Parenting stage Clothing needs are shared with needs of children Children grow quickly = more needs Launching stage Parents have more money for other expenses Retirement stage More of a need for casual clothing Clothing needs change as people move through life cycle

5 Family Values Each family has its own
Spends more money on leisure time activities than clothing vs. Focuses on appearance and brand name clothing Some may wear hand me downs Some may shop sales only Some families more conservative with clothing choices than others How would you describe your families values in relationship to clothing?

6 Clothing Management A lot is involved…
Shopping Laundering Ironing/Dry Cleaning Altering Repairing Storing Sharing responsibilities makes it easier for a family Make a list of who does what in your own family in managing clothing.

7 Setting Clothing Priorities
What’s most important at a given time when all needs or wants can’t be met? Each person has a different point of view The best interest of the entire family shouldn’t be overlooked Ex.-A new suit may help a father get a new job so another family member may have to do without their own need/want temporarily. Families should discuss these kinds of situations

8 Identifying Resources
Time Shopping for the best buy Talent Clothes making, altering Money Family members Hand-me-downs, sharing Different types of clothing stores Hunting, athletic, professional, etc. Different families have different resources

9 Budgeting for Clothes Only one item in a family budget
Clothing expenses add up (especially for large families) Undergarments, socks, accessories, shoes, and clothes are all considerations to be made Each family has to determine how much of their budget can be allotted at one time for clothing Approximately how much money do you or your parent spend on clothes for you per month?

10 Sharing Responsibilities
Clothing takes time and effort to select, clean, store, and repair Families decide what works best for them based on different roles members play Delegating is sometimes necessary Charts can be helpful Different families = different particulars Sharing responsibilities makes it easier to manage clothing needs within a family and can strengthen family relationships

11 Review and Activities Recalling the Facts – page 58 - #1-13
Thinking Critically #1-2 Make a weekly schedule for your family that could actually be implemented to make clothing management easier for everyone. List family member names and responsibilities. Bring one of your favorite outfits or pairs of shoes to class tomorrow that you feel represents your personality!!
