1 Diversity Civics & Economics Goal 10 Mr. Vivian

2 America: a Nation of Immigrants The American colonists who started this country were immigrants. 1910  12% of the population was foreign born. 2025  15% of the population will be foreign born (highest percentage EVER!) Today the fastest growing group of immigrants in America are Hispanic. ◦By 2050 they will make up 30% of Americans, today they are 15% of all Americans.

3 Assimilation: process where all the different people in America come together as one nation. The American Melting Pot Evidence: shared language, American Flag,

4 Multiculturalism: Different cultures in America don’t blend together, but each one’s unique characteristics shapes American culture. The American Tossed Salad Evidence: Directions are often printed in Spanish and English, people tend to hang out with people with similar backgrounds.

5 Diversity and Discrimination America has always been a very diverse place  there are many different languages, races & religions. Diversity can lead to discrimination when people do not respect one another. ◦Sexism: discrimination based on gender ◦Racism: based on race ◦Ageism: based on age ◦Also there can be discrimination based on religion

6 Diversity and Discrimination Affirmative Action -is a government program used to reverse past discrimination against minorities and those with disabilities. Brings diversity and ends job discrimination.  Multicultural education has been used in schools to expose students to different cultures and better acquaint ALL students with America’s democratic ideals.

8 Liberty and Justice for All! Liberty and Justice are two important democratic principles that make our country unique because they are given to EVERYONE.
