Last Thursday we looked at images of five major world belief systems We also discussed that there is a lot of tension between them Your task is to compose an argumentative essay in which you confront the statement: Unity of faith is not possible You must support your argument with textual evidence REMEMBER?

To try and confront such a monumental task, we are going to try to simplify by asking you to find patterns What do they agree on? Disagree on? Similar beginnings? Similar behaviors? BELIEF SYSTEMS

All civilizations and all people at some point have asked the question: How did we get here? STEP ONE

There are thousands Different civilizations all answered the question differently The author of the first article contends that they all follow a pattern… CREATION MYTHS

WHY DOES THE WORLD HAVE BELIEF SYSTEMS? What pattern do creation myths tend to follow? Using “The Sweat of his Brow” Explain how this story fits the pattern identified above Define “Toil” in the last line (you can look up on your phone) Using “The Cosmic Egg” Explain how this story fits the pattern identified above According to the story, where do the people on earth come from?

To determine how to resolve a conflict, we must first understand what the conflict is…. Conflict occurs when there are differences. So let’s find them… Perhaps a pattern may emerge… STEP TWO

You will each receive a handful of sources. Your job is to read each source carefully and learn the story behind how each belief system started You should highlight/annotate each source for the most important imformation IN THE BEGINNING…

For each belief system you will submit to me an outline that looks like this: THEN…

We are missing an Islam component (oops  ) So we will tell you as a class what you need to know ISLAM

Please be advised that this topic – the origins of belief systems – can constitute an entire college course. Your sources are brief and presented at various literacy levels. They are not intended to be the WHOLE story. Just enough to help you with your final task. Any “holes” in our dialogue I will fill for you. I promise. I love answering questions and talking about history. I love learning. Try me. DISCLAIMER

Please read each document carefully…. If you have questions – ask us…. Be an active reader. I have highlighters. Annotate…. If you are interested – Google. Find out more. That is encouraged and acceptable… as long as you tell me what you learn. I like learning too. ON TO STEP ONE…
