1 The Lives of the Egyptians Egyptian society was divided into social classes, with the pharaoh at the top and peasants at the bottom. Peasants worked the fields and also on public works projects. Women had most of the rights of men. 1 of 3 Ancient Egypt and Nubia Section 4: Ancient Egyptian Culture Writing in Ancient Egypt Ancient Egyptians wrote using symbols called hieroglyphs. They moved from writing on clay and stone tablets to using papyrus. A French scholar finally unlocked the meanings of the hieroglyphs in the Rosetta Stone which led the way toward understanding all Egyptian writing.
