4 Prepositional phrase: a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun. Grammar Rule: Use a comma to separate a long introductory prepositional phrase from the rest of the sentence. Examples: During the varsity soccer game, Kwame scored two goals. 5 Appositive phrase: A group of words that renames the noun beside it. Grammar Rule: If the sentence would be clear without the appositive phrase, then use commas to separate the phrase from the rest of the sentence. Examples: Happy Lillehoj, my seven-year-old dog, refuses to go outside when it is raining. The popular US president John Kennedy was known for his eloquent and inspirational speeches.

6 Participial phrases: A group of words that begins with a participial (“ing” or “ed” or “en” verb that acts as an adjective) and ends with a noun. Grammar Rules: 1. If the phrase begins a sentence, place a comma after the phrase. 2. Use comma(s) to separate the phrase from the sentence if the phrase is not important to the meaning of the sentence. Examples: Sid, watching an old movie, drifted in and out of sleep. The student earning the highest grade will receive a reward.
