3 Program History WHS advocated for a high-quality orientation program that would address the needs of new members of the SES DMRD 974 mandated the program in 1992 Two-week course of study was launched in 1994  One week residential and one week travel to COCOMs  Focuses a spotlight on the outstanding performance of SES responsibilities, as defined by the ECQs  A unique general educational offering that highlights networking and peer learning

4 Program Objectives The objectives of the APEX program are to enhance understanding of:  The structure and processes of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Combatant Commands, the Joint Staff, and the Military Departments as they contribute to the mission of Department of Defense.  The priorities and challenges of other Federal agencies and the Defense industry as they contribute to National Security in partnership with the Department of Defense.  The contributions and challenges of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines within the context of the overarching Defense mission.  The importance of information sharing and relationship building across the total force through networking opportunities with military and civilian colleagues.  An enterprise-wide perspective that encompasses leadership expectations and challenges currently facing DoD leaders.  The changing role of the SES corps within the DoD.

5 Expectations APEX is a unique executive education experience that highlights networking and peer learning It provides you, the newly appointed SES, the opportunity to reflect on your new duties and learn new tools for success The program is designed to assist you – the senior leader – to frame your responsibilities in light of DoD and component priorities APEX offers a blend of briefings from senior ranking DoD civilian and military leaders and opportunities for discussion and activities focusing on the themes of transformation and transition

6 Evaluations Daily and end of program evaluations A link will be sent to your email account where you will be able to complete the daily evaluations electronically. A hard copy option will also be available. It is important to complete these daily so that your suggestions are immediately incorporated Provide your written comments as this provides specific insight into how to improve the program, but please be sensitive to the fact that these evaluations are compiled and included in the end of program evaluation report which is distributed to all speakers and commands

7 Sign-up for speaker introductions for Week 1 and Travel Week Responsibilities: –Based on speaker biography, give a brief introduction –Let the speaker know that you will serve as timekeeper –Thank the speaker for addressing the group (and present first- time speakers with an APEX coin) –Write a short, handwritten thank you note – staff will provide note card and will then mail thank you notes to the speakers (there are samples in your binders) Speaker Introductions, Presentation of Coins and Thank You Notes

8 Non-Attribution Policy APEX participants, staff members, and program facilitators are encouraged to freely discuss with speakers the opinions and views they express during their presentations Non-attribution precludes participants from citing the views and opinions of a speaker who addresses governmental policy/program issues (even if he/she is not identified by name) when questioning subsequent speakers

9 Ground Rules Smoke Free Workplace Photography Security – All APEX participants must hold a SECRET clearance or above (use CAC card for Pentagon entrance) Out of consideration for others, we ask that Blackberries, laptops, PDAs and cell phones be turned off during presentations

10 When asking a question of a speaker please remember to state: –Your name –Your organization Please wear your name badge at all times Introductions for Q&A

11 Dress Code WEEK 1 Business Attire for the Pentagon (Sept 14 and 16) – NOTE: There will be a group photo opportunity on the 14 th with SecDef Business Casual attire for Hyatt Arlington days (Sept 15 and 17) Travel Week Business Casual Pack for active participation Comfortable shoes

16 Meals & Breaks – Week 1 Breakfast in the hotel restaurant daily from Monday through Thursday using coupons provided in key card packet (optional) Lunch will be provided at the Pentagon on Monday and Wednesday Lunch will be provided at the hotel restaurant ‘cityhouse’ on Tuesday and Thursday Dinner tonight in Salon A Dinner Monday, Tuesday (Salon B&C), and Wednesday (Salons A)

17 Monday 9/14 and Wednesday 9/16 at the Pentagon –Metro to and from Rosslyn Station –Metro cards provided at registration table –Please use your CAC card for entrance to Pentagon Tuesday and Thursday 9/15 and 9/17 at the Hyatt Arlington Week 1 Transportation

18 Bus transportation to Andrews AFB on Thursday will leave hotel at approximately 4:30pm Transportation while on travel –Bus transportation will be provided (please leave first two rows at the front open for staff) –MILAIR will provide transportation from city to city (flights will be announced to you as they are confirmed) Transportation on the last day –MILAIR flight back to Andrews AFB with DV shuttle to National Airport/Metro –Transportation will be provided to those with flights out of Miami Travel Week Transportation

19 Meals & Breaks – Travel Week APEX Staff will pay the cost of any group meals and provide an itemized receipt at the end of the week Please be prepared to pay by cash or check on Friday the 25 th Estimated total: $200 (includes $50 for Camp Allen firing range) You are responsible for the following meals on your own: 3 breakfasts (Norfolk, 19,20, 21 September) 6 dinners (Norfolk, 18, 19, 20 Sept / Colorado Springs, 21 Sept / Tampa, 23 Sept / Miami, 24 Sept)
