 Next  Back  Exit  Explanation/Hint  Practice Game Hint

 Given an example of an analog clock, students will be able to identify the time on the face of the clock in five minute increments.

 Given a quiz at the end of this lesson, students will be able to tell time on an analog clock with 80% accuracy.

 Computer station  Analog clock simulation  One-on-one with aide  Fourth grade classroom

Standard 1- Number sense. Students will gain a sense of numbers by working with the clock and identifying each number as they work through the activity. Standard 2- Computation. Students will be able to add and subtract the numbers from the clock as we work through the scenario problems. Standard 5- Measurement. “Students will learn how to tell time on a clock to the nearest five minutes.” Standard 6- Problem Solving. Students will gain a sense of being able to approach a problem and explain their reasoning of solving it.

 Because many big cities still use analog clocks on their courthouses, or other important landmarks, along with most wristwatches worn today, it is important to understand how to tell time using an analog clock.

Hands Second Hand Minute Hand Hour Hand Face Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Quiz

 An analog clock is a used to indicate time using angles.

 This part is moving around the clock at all times displaying how many seconds have passed each minute. Back to Review

 This hand on the clock moves one hash mark foreword each time the second hand makes one rotation around the clock. Back to Review

 This hand moves to the next hour on the face of the clock every time the minute hand moves 60 times, or makes one rotation around the clock. Usually shorter than the minute hand! Back to review

 This displays large numbers which tell you the hour of time along with 60 hash marks that display what minute it is within the hour. Back to Review

 Which one is the minute hand? 1 2 3 Option 1 Option 2 Option 3

 Nice try, be sure to check out the hint if you need a little extra help! Hint

 Remember the minute hand is the longest hand on the clock that is the same color as the minute hand! Back to Question

 Correct! Good Job! Let’s move on.

 Now we are going to actually identify how to tell the time on the clock itself!

 There is not always a second hand on every analog clock because time is not standardly told with seconds. So decide if there is a second hand on the clock so you don’t confuse it with the minute hand. Back to Review

 Locate the minute hand on the clock. This is the hardest step but gets much easier after a few practice runs! Each hour labels five minutes on the face of the clock, so count each one until you locate the minute had counting by fives until you reach the minute hand. If it is between two numbers then count up to the nearest five the clock is at and count the hash marks individually until you locate the minute hand. Back to Review

 Now locate the shorter hour hand. If it is pointing directly at a number, then that is the current hour we are in. if it is between two numbers, then we are in the hour that the number just passed. Back to Review

 Now let’s try and test our newly acquired time telling skills!

 What time is the clock displaying? 9:30 6:35 10:15

 Nice try, Lets go back and review with a hint Hint

 Remember if the hour hand is between two numbers, we are in the hour that has last been passed by the hour hand. Back to question

 Correct! Nice Job!

 Now lets review what we have gone over thus far and answer some final questions

 If you need to take another look at the second hand lets do so now! Second Hand

 If we need to look at the minute hand, let’s do so now Minute Hand

 Now on to the hour hand, if we need to look at it again, do so now Hour Hand

 If we need to look at the face of the clock again, let’s do that now Face

 If you are unsure about the first step of telling time, let’s look at that Step 1

 If we need another look at step two, do so now Step 2

 If we need to take a look at step three of telling time, let’s do that now Step 3

 Now we are going to do some final review questions. If you need to take a final look at anything we have discussed be sure to check back and anything you need.

 What hand is this arrow pointing to? Hour Second Minute

 Nice try, but let’s take one final look Hint

 Remember that the second hand is the thinnest and on the face and is always moving. Back to Question 1

 Correct! Let’s move on

 What time is this clock displaying down to seconds? 9:10.25 10:20.25 10:10.25

 Nice try, lets take one final look Hint

 Remember to determine what hour you are in and then read the minutes next and the seconds last. Back to question

 Correct! Let’s move on!

 What time does this clock say that we read everyday? 12:15 3:00 2:30

 Nice try, but let’s take another look Hint

 Remember to read the hour hand first, which is the shorter of the two hands, and they find the minutes. Back to Question

 Correct! Let’s move on

 What time does this clock tell us? 10:35 7:50 12:35

 Nice try, let’s take one more look at it Hint

 Remember if the hour hand is in between two numbers, then we are in the hour that the hand last passed. Back to Question

 Correct! Almost done!

 What time is this clock telling? 2:55 3:55 1:55

 Nice try, let’s take one more look at the clock Hint

 Remember that when it is almost a new hour the hour hand may be close to the next hour, but we are still in the last hour! Back to Question

 Correct! Nice Job!

 Congratulations! You have completed the lesson on telling time! If you would like to practice more follow the buttons at the bottom of this slide to do so!
