Who is the audience? Grade 2 math class/ re-teaching/reinforcement Math-multiplication The focus is on the review/re-teaching of multiplication strategies Objective The learner will recognize the multiplication sign/ symbol (x). The learner will be able to explain the connection between multiplication and addition. The learner will be able to apply the process of multiplication to real world applications. Montana State Standards : Math- 3rd grade 3.1.3 Develop multiplication and division concepts, apply number and operation models and strategies, and reason and justify using properties of operations. 3.1.3.A Describe and use multiple representations for multiplication. 1

“Reach for the Moon, and even if you miss you’ll still land among the stars!”

Before you begin your mission, here are some important symbols you will see on the voyage that can help you. Use your headphones and listen to the text being read aloud when you see this symbol. When you see this picture, you may stand up and try this yoga pose. Your break should not be longer than 5 minutes. Be sure not to disrupt others. You may go back and review the previous slide at any time. “stop and think” about what you learned before you go on to the next slide.

Your Mission: Master the multiplication strategies to receive the alien’s gift.

You will take two experienced astronauts with you. When you see their picture, they will assist you in your mission.

Mission : Checklist You should:  Be able to recognize the symbol for multiplication (X).  Be able to use addition to help you solve a multiplication problem.  Be able to use words (“groups of”) to help you understand and solve a multiplication problem.  Be able to draw a picture to help you solve a multiplication problem.  Be able to arrive at the correct answer using one of the multiplication strategies.

Multiplication Matters! 1.You know to add when you see this sign. + 2. You know to subtract when you see this sign. – 3. You are going to learn to multiply when you see this sign. x

Why does multiplication matter? Multiplication is a faster way of adding. Since you already know how to add, this will help make understanding multiplication easier. When you get stuck with a new multiplication problem, you will be able to use addition as a strategy to help you figure out the answer. However, your goal will be to eventually master your multiplication facts. This will make solving real world problems easier and faster.

Remember this symbol/sign means we are going to multiply. X

Mission : Checkpoint! 1. What should you do when you see this math symbol (X)? a)addadd b) subtract subtract c) multiplymultiply

Remember our goal is to understand what multiplication is and practice the strategies. Try a little more practice. Add is not the correct answer because the sign for addition is +.

Remember our goal is to understand what multiplication is and practice the strategies. Try a little more practice. Subtract is not the correct answer because the sign for subtraction is - not X.

I see you’ve been thinking and practicing and your hard work is paying off!

This symbol/sign (X) also is another way of saying “groups of”. Remember when you see the multiplication symbol/sign you can insert the words “groups of” to help you understand and solve the multiplication problem.

Here is an example: 3X 2 = 3 groups of 2

Let’s see if using the words “groups of” in place of the X symbol helps us find and understand the answer. 3 X 2 = 3 groups of 2

If we have three groups of two, we can add the groups and find that the answer is six (6). 3 X 2 = 3 groups of 2 2+ 2

In the previous example, you saw how inserting words “groups of “ for the sign, using addition, and/or drawing a picture helped you solve the multiplication problem. Remember: When you get stuck, you might want to try one of these strategies. 1.Replace the X sign with “groups of” to make sense of the problem. 2.Use addition to help you solve the problem. 3.Draw a picture to visualize the problem.

Mission: Checkpoint 2 2. What words could you use in place of the multiplication (X) sign to help you understand and solve the problem? 3 X 3 = a)multiplicationmultiplication b)tons oftons of c)groups ofgroups of

Remember our goal is to understand what multiplication is and practice the strategies. Time for a tune up. Sorry, “multiplication” is not the right answer. Please go back for review. Let’s Review

Remember our goal is to understand what multiplication is and practice the strategies. Time for a tune up. Sorry, “tons of” is not the correct answer. Please go back for review. Let’s Review

Good thinking! Catching butterflies or math problems takes practice and focus. 3 groups of 3 = 9.

Let’s try another one! This time use addition to come up with the answer. 6 X 3 = ? 6 groups of 3

How did you do? 6 X 3 = 18 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3

Mission: Checkpoint 3! 3. Use the addition strategy to help you solve this problem. 3 X 6 = ? a)3 + 63 + 6 b)6 + 66 + 6 c)6 + 6 + 66 + 6 + 6

Good thinking! Correct. 3 X 6 = 18. So the addition sentence is 6 + 6 + 6 = 18.

Remember our goal is to understand what multiplication is and practice the strategies. Sorry 3 + 6 = 9. You might want to use the words “groups of “ to help you understand this problem. 3 groups of 6. Try Again!

Remember our goal is to understand what multiplication is and practice the strategies. Sorry 6 + 6 is not correct. Try using the words “groups of “ to help you solve the problem 3 groups of 6. Try Again!

We are going to use these strategies to help us understand multiplication and solve problems until we meet our goal of mastering our multiplication facts. Here is another example: 2 x 5 = 2 groups of 5

Let’s visualize the problem by drawing a picture this time. 2 x 5 = 2 groups of 5 5 + 5 = 10

Mission: Checkpoint 4! 4.Use the strategy of drawing a picture to help you solve this problem: 2 X 4 = ? a) b) c)

Nice Work! Correct. 2 X 4 = 8. 2 groups of 4 = 8.

Try a different strategy to help you understand the problem. This time use the words “groups of” in place of the multiplication sign to help you understand the problem 2 X 4 = ? The picture you chose represents 1 group of 4 or 1 X 4 = 4. Try Again!

Try a different strategy to help you understand the problem. This time use the words “groups of” in place of the multiplication sign to help you understand the problem 2 X 4 = ? The picture you chose represents 2 groups of 3 or 2 X 3 = 6. Try Again!

Now you choose a strategy and see if you can come up with the correct answer! 3X 5 = ? Hint: choose a strategy

Which strategy did you use? You can also try two strategies and check your own work! 3 X 5 = 15 3 groups of 5= 15 5 + 5 + 5 = 15

Mission: Checkpoint 5! 5. Using any of your strategies, what is the answer to this problem: 5 X 3 = ? a)1515 b)88 c)2020

Use a different strategy this time and see if you can come up with the right answer. But, first let’s look at a few more examples. Hint: Use one of your strategies: addition, draw a picture or use the words “groups of” to help you understand the problem. More Examples

Good thinking! Your practice is paying off.
