THE RIVER WYE By Lorenzo Evans
2
WHERE: The River Wye’s source is in the Welsh mountains at Plynimon. It flows past several villages including Rhayader, Builth Wells, Hey-on-Wye, Hereford (the only city on the river Wye), Ross-on-Wye, Symonds Yat, Monmouth and Tintern. It meets the Severn estuary just below Chepstow. It’s total length is 134 miles (216km). The lower 16 miles (26km) from Redbrook to Chepstow forms the border between England and Wales.

FACTS : The river Wye is famous for its salmon. It is a great place to fish for there is no pollution. The river Wye has many tributaries, so many that some of them still haven’t been named! The river is also a great place for sport (find out more on the next slide). The Romans made a bridge across the river Wye upstream from the present day Chepstow. It was improved by Sir William Sandys in the 1660s. A horse towing path was added in 1808, but only up to Hereford. The Wye remained commercially navigable until the 1850s when commercial traffic moved in. The river Wye is still navigable up to Monmouth.

SPORT : The river Wye offers canoeing and kayaking for all ages. I have been canoeing on the river Wye!!! Kayaking lessons are available near the villages. Canoes have 2 or 3 seats depending if you get a large one or a normal one. You have single paddle oars; one for each person. FACT: For canoeing and kayaking, you can do grades, just like instruments!
