1 The Underground Railway
By Logan Malough Block A SS 10 Mr. Chan

2 What was the underground railway
The underground railway was the network of secret routes and safe houses that black Americans used to escape slavery. It was started in the late 1800s.

3 Slavery of black Americans
The underground railway was risky because white Americans were on the search for them. If the black Americans get caught, escaped slaves were severely punished.

4 Being Homesick In the early years, some black immigrants remembered their lives before slavery and wanted to see their homelands again. But their letters were denied by the Americans and they never get the chance to go home.

5 The Churches Quaker and Methodist churches support the fugitives who usually travelled hundreds of kilometers on foot.

6 Josiah Henson Josiah Henson was a slave in Charles county Maryland who escaped to upper Canada. When he was a boy, his father was a slave.

7 Richard Pierpoint Richard Pierpoint was a slave since he was captured and sold at age 16. He survived crossing the Atlantic and was sold to someone named Pierpoint.

8 James Douglas Sir James Douglas was a British colonial governor in Vancouver island who invited some black colonists to settle with him.

9 Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was an African American abolitionist and union spy during the civil war. She was also a black activist who helped hundreds of slaves escape through the railway.

10 And that’s my project.
