Art as a Language, by Joseph Margolis and Dance Notation and Chronology, by Fernau Hall Presented By: Lauren Garcia and Lindsay Kaufman and Edited By: Laura Pratt and Dr. Kay Picart

Art as a Language Language in its most basic form usually engages some type of ____________ structure to form coherent sentences. Why is language hard to define? Why is art hard to “get”?

Art as a Language According to Margolis, what type of art causes a person to feel some type of emotion? Do you feel that this sentiment is accurate? Do you think that any particular art forms are “better” at inspiring emotion in a viewer/listener than others? How so?

Art as a Language “It is also quite possible that a work of art exhibit an expressive quality of a conventional sort without serving a linguistic or semi-linguistic function in so doing. For instance, a dance step may exhibit a certain characteristic romantic languor without representing, referring to, exemplifying or symbolizing such languor.” (380)

Dance Notation and Chronology The history of ballet is very short, especially compared to written epics like Gilgamesh or The Odyssey. What are the earliest known ballet’s? What are the two most important ballet’s during that period?

Dance Notation and Chronology Why is it that even if those dances are performed today they are different? What happens when ballet is passed from dancer to dancer? What si the main cause for the loss of these classic ballets?

Dance Notation and Chronology What are todays choreographers wanting to do?

Dance Notation and Chronology Modern dancers and choreographers are usually “illiterate” in the ways of dance notation. (394) Why is dance notation often rejected?

Dance Notation and Chronology In 1947, Joan and Rudolf Benesh succeeded in creating an acceptable form of dance notation. Two fundamental principles:  A system of notation had to be primarily visual: ___________________________  It should be integrated with musical notation: ______________________________

Dance Notation and Chronology Soon Joan and Rudolf Benesh were “scoring” whole ballets. http://www.benesh.org/frames.html
