Plagiarism UI 100 Dr. WJ Mueller

What is Plagiarism? Definition: “To take the thoughts, writings, inventions, etc., of another and use as one’s own, especially to take and use a passage, plot, etc., from the work of another writer.” The World Book Dictionary. Doubleday & Company, Inc. 1974 (Notice that I put Quotes at the beginning and end of the Definition.) (I also cited the source of the quote.)

Types of Plagiarism Three General Categories 1. Copy the work of another and call it your own 2. Quote or use the thoughts of another and not give credit to the person 3. Improper citation of someone else’s work

Copy a Work—It is the worst At New Mexico State University in 1982, Michael Hand received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. In 1987 an anonymous tip showed that he had plagiarized his dissertation. In April 1988, the University rescinded his Ph.D. Hand v. Matchett, 957 F.2d 791 (10thCir. 1992).

(Copy a Work cont.) More commonly…it is the easy way to get a grade for a class Go to the internet and copy a paper off Use the work of a student from a previous class Have someone else write the paper for you

Quote or Use Thoughts of Another Whenever you use the words of someone else, put quotes around it and reference it Whenever you reword the thoughts of another, give credit to the author with a reference

What do you NOT have to Reference? Things that are common Knowledge Examples might include: The earth surface is 70 percent water Plants belong to the Kingdom Plantae The United States declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776

Footnotes and Endnotes Footnotes are references at the bottom of the page on which a work is referenced Endnotes are at the end of the paper (or chapter), and are usually on a separate page

Bibliography References Literature Cited Are these words synonyms or are there some differences? Which should you use as a heading on your papers? Read on for definitions and explanations

Bibliography Definition: A relatively complete collection of all references on a given subject. I have been involved in helping to put together only one bibliography in my life. When I was a graduate student, people in our lab assembled all the references we could find on the subject of plant responses to gravity. The bibliography contained over 1700 references

References Definition: A list of references cited in the text, plus other references used for background information, but not specifically cited in the text.

Works (Literature) Cited Definition: A list of references cited in the text of the paper In this class, I want you to use Works Cited as the title of the last page of your papers

It is my hope that you have more respect for yourself than to plagiarize or cheat your way through college
