2 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  To make a sentence negative in Spanish, you usually put “no” in front of the verb or expression.  In English, you usually use the word “not.”  No me gusta cantar.  I do not like to sing.

3 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  No me gusta correr.  I do not like to run.  No me gusta patinar.  I do not like to skate.  No me gusta escribir cuentos.  I do not like to write stories.

4 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  To answer a question negatively, in Spanish you often use “no” twice.  The first “no” answers the question.  The second “no” implies I do not or I don’t.

5 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  This is similar to the way you answer a question in English.  ¿Te gusta escribir cuentos?  Do you like to write stories?  No, no me gusta.  No, I don’t.

6 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  In Spanish, you might use one or more negatives after answering “no.”  ¿Te gusta cantar?  Do you like to sing?  No, no me gusta nada.  No, I don’t like it at all.

7 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  I don’t like no dancing.  Double negatives are Not OK in English!  No me gusta bailar nada.  Double (and triple) negatives Are OK in Spanish!

8 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  If you want to say that you do not like either of two (or more) choices, use the expression ni…ni:  No me gusta ni nadar ni dibujar.  I don’t like either swimming or drawing.  I like neither swimming nor drawing.

9 Sra. Schwarz Negatives  I don’t like either going to school or studying.  No me gusta ni ir a la escuela ni estudiar.  I like neither reading books nor reading magazines.  No me gusta ni leer libros ni leer revistas.
