Do Now: According to John Locke, “if a government fails to protect its citizens’ natural rights (life, liberty, and property), the citizens have a right to overthrow it”. 2 The Enlightenment Philosophes had new ideas about the purpose/role of government. Government should guarantee natural human rights (life, liberty, property). If the government does not protect people’s natural rights, they have the right to change the government (John Locke). The Enlightenment caused a trend of political revolutions.
