8 BRITAIN’S PARLIAMENT Britain s Parliament sometimes known as the mother of Parliaments has exerted a strong influence on the development of democratic political institutions overseas.

9 The House of Commons There are 650 M.P.s elected to the House of Commons but only 370 seats in the debating chamber for them to sit on; they do not have their own special seats or desks there. The size of the Commons has deliberately been kept small. Even so. the Chamber is very rarely full. M.P.s are paid a not very generous salary, plus expenses. The Prime Minister and his or her Ministers are paid on a higher scale. The Leader of the Opposition also receives a good salary.

10 The House of Lords Members of this Upper House, the House of Lords, are not elected. They sit there because of their rank.the House of Lords The chairman of the House of Lords is the Lord Chancellor and he sits on a special seat called the Woolsack. The division of Parliament into two Houses goes back over some 700 years when a feudal assembly assisted the King. In modern times, real political power rests with the elected House although members of the House of Lords may occupy important cabinet posts.

11 The End.
