COMPOUNDS OF LIVING THINGS CHAPTER 11 – 2 Part 5

OTHER IMPORTANT COMPOUNDS In addition to very large molecules, organisms also need a variety of smaller compounds that are not organic. This is why getting enough vitamins and minerals is so important.

WATER No living thing on Earth can survive without water. Water is in every cell in your body.

Regulates Temperature One important thing water does is to keep our bodies from getting too hot. When we get over-heated, sweating helps to remove the heat through the evaporation of water.

Transports Substances Water is important to our bodies because it moves nutrients through our blood to feed our cells. It also helps remove waste products from our body.

Provides Lubrication Water also keeps all of our joints and muscles moving freely.

SALT Salt plays an important role in nerve cells. Salt helps nerve cells conduct electrical signals throughout your body.

If you lose salt through sweating, then you need to replace it. Ordinary table salt is the kind of salt your body uses the most.

GOOD NUTRITION INCLUDES ALL OF THESE!
