Instructional Technology for Teaching CTE 629A Rob Askey Ed.D.

Hard Drives Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) is a computer bus primarily designed for transfer of data between the motherboard and mass storage devices, such as hard disk drives and optical drives, inside a computer SATA Faster than EIDE/Newer Technology/More Expensive

Hard Drives EIDE Slower than SATA/Cheaper

USB Multimedia Keyboard USB Newer Technology than Serial PS/2

Serial Multimedia Keyboard Older keyboards typically use a ps/2 connector (round connector with 4 or 6 pins). If you want to connect your older keyboard to a new PC you will need to physically change the ps/2 plug to a USB plug (rectangular, flat connector) PS/2 connector

USB Mouse Most people try to get a wireless mouse There can be a huge range in price

Memory RAM (random access memory), a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices, such as printers. This is an easy upgrade

CDRW SATA Short for CD-ReWritable disk, a type of CD disk that enables you to write onto it in multiple sessions. One of the problems with CD-R disks is that you can only write to them once. With CD-RW drives and disks, you can treat the optical disk just like a floppy or hard disk, writing data onto it multiple times.

DVD-RW SATA Short for DVD-ReWritable, a re-recordable DVD format If you buy a DVD-RW SATA drive it will also be a CD- RW

CPU (central processing unit) This is the part of a computer that controls the interpretation and execution of instructions

Motherboard A motherboard is the central or primary printed circuit board (PCB) making up a complex electronic system, such as a modern computer or laptop. Everything plugs into the motherboard

Monitor Contrast ratio- can help you determine how rich the color will be in on-screen images. A higher ratio is better. Screen resolution- signifies the number of dots (pixels) on the entire screen. For example, a 640-by- 480 pixel screen is capable of displaying 640 distinct dots on each of 480 lines, or about 300,000 pixels

Peripheral A peripheral is a piece of computer hardware that is added to a host computer, i.e any hardware except the computer, in order to expand its abilities. More specifically, the term is used to describe those devices that are optional in nature, as opposed to hardware that is either demanded or always required in principle.
