- the EP perspective - Rodolfo Maslias - Ciprian Dumea TermCoord, 15.10.2014

Terminology in Studio now Without Groupshare (EU Institutions): - Recycle terminology using termbases - Termbases can be appended to any project - Add, delete and modify terms directly in Studio With Groupshare: - All of the above plus - Larger-scale sharing of termbases and many other possibilities

Consult and feed IATE The Interinstitutional IATE Management Group conceived a prototype allowing to retrieve from IATE the terminology of a specific text Just as in the case of Euramis retrievals, the term retrievals, stored in termbases, could be automatically appended to the Studio project

Consult_term feature Natively embedded in Studio It would give translators an immediate and up-to-date access to targeted IATE data in real time In most cases, translators are to conduct terminological research only in the case of the terms which are not automatically proposed Terminology (in canonical form) can be automatically proposed through autosuggest

Studio interface – partial view

Studio interface – specific windows 1 Term recognition window (customisable; optional) Translation window – autosuggest feature (very useful; optional)

Studio interface – specific windows 2 Termbase viewer – for extra information about a term (also optional)

Add_term feature Natively embedded in Studio and seamlessly integrated with the consult_term feature Translators can save their research, for example inside a termbase dedicated to new terminology The results can then be refined by TermCoord and translation units and finally inserted into IATE, so as to be retrieved later when necessary

Studio interface – specific windows 3 - selecting a source term and a target term allows a translator to save a term pair in the default termbase; - this term is also immediately accessible to all translators who share the same termbase.

Store and Share Terminology This option in Studio allows for feeding and sharing terminology across translation units Creating a multilingual termbase would allow translators working in another language on the same document to see and use in real time the terms researched by their colleagues

Benefits Less time would be spent on searching terminology Less search duplication Less changes in the working environment (switching from the translation tool to the web browser and other documents) Quicker identification of solutions Easier insertion of new terms to IATE

Towards an integrated terminology ecosystem This solution would allow for a term to make a full circle to and from the desk of the translator/terminologist from and to IATE There are many technical challenges ahead related to the maximum number of concurrent users, size of term retrievals, multilingual dimension, server availability and the best technology to use

Risks Too much noise Poor database synchronization Resources needed

Offering IATE through Studio in the EP: a common vision A Business Case was prepared by TermCoord in cooperation with IT developers in DG TRAD (DAS), with the Business Analysis Cell and translator representatives to define the needs of the DG concerning the integration of terminology, and more specifically IATE, in the CAT tools. The request is on the list of DG TRAD's projects submitted for inclusion for the 2015 IT Programme of the EP, pending approval by our authorities

Thank you for your attention For any comments/requests, please contact TermCoord at dgtrad.termcoord@europarl.europa.eu
