3 Fellow Nomination Process Nomination takes some effort (40 to 50 hours) Must have a detailed knowledge of the person (they usually must know they are being nominated) Switchgear Fellows Committee provides committee endorsement and promotes candidates

4 What Is the PES and IEEE Fellows Committee Looking for? Three categories Engineer Technical Leader Educator “a concise and accurate description of technical contributions is of paramount importance”

5 Technical Contributions Significant Documented Technical papers (single or lead author) Patents Standards contributions (w.g. chair, standards medallion, prize standard, etc.)

6 How to Apply Know Your Audience/competition No blanks on the application Well written, strongly written No marginal references

7 Competition Professors and researchers make up a majority of Fellows Not uncommon for a candidate to have 60 publications

11 Fellow Grade References 5 to 8 (get 8) MUST be all outstanding Known references Talk to everyone and find out how they will grade the person Make sure they have sent in the reference on time

12 Fellows Reference 4. On the basis of the work of the candidate, please indicate whether or not, in your judgement, the candidate meets the requirements for Fellow grade. What distinguishes his/her contributions from the norm? Yes. Better quality work This candidate far exceeds the requirements for Fellow grade. The innovative new concepts in equipment and testing methods have caused major changes in our industry greatly improving the reliability of high voltage equipment and reducing the cost of testing. He has had a positive influence and was a significant contributor to all high voltage standards developed by the committee for the past 20 years. He has organized and taught the tutorial for the committee chaired panel sessions, etc. 5. Please furnish below any additional data not appearing on the nomination form that you feel will be helpful to the Fellow Committee. None Mr. X is active in interesting young people in engineering. He is a tutor for math and science students students at his local high school and is a volunteer for the high school science fair judging. In 1996-1998 he was a member of his local school board. Beyond his very significant technical contributions to our industry, he has extended his impact beyond our industry to his community. 7. 14 Wording Strongly supporting. Joe Smith has worked on many standards. Joe Smith was the chairman of the working group which developed C37xxx, and a major contributor to the development of C37 XYY and XZZ. The innovative new concepts he developed in these standards have revolutionized circuit breaker testing.
