1 Pre-algebra 7 th grade Pre-algebra A The first of two years of pre-algebra Concentrating on the basics while introducing algebra concepts Pre-algebra AB A one-year course This course is one for those who have shown a high percentage of mastery in basic skills Algebra concepts are introduced and developed

2 Where do they go next year? ….and why? Pre-algebra B This course is a continuance of the7 th grade experience. Fundamentals of algebra are developed in preparation for Algebra I in the 9 th grade Algebra I There are two levels of Algebra I – Algebra I and Advanced Algebra I Students at this level sh be recommended to Geometry in the 9 th grade

3 The “A” student Organization/Work Habits Completes work independently and consistently Participates in class discussions (usually) Is on time and well-prepared for class, having the materials he/she needs

4 Understands the concepts Demonstrates understanding through written tests and class discussions Remembers previously learned information with little or no prompting Completes tasks with more depth than just memorization would allow Understands the importance of practice and review/correcting mistakes Synthesizes information and sees relationships among concepts

5 Communication Uses the language of the class in oral and in written form Often answers and asks age-appropriate – sometimes complex – questions Can provide details to show understanding of concepts Is likely able to peer-tutor effectively

6 Self-Evaluation Questions what he/she doesn’t know Analyzes own mistakes Asks specific questions when confused

7 They don’t always get there at the same time… All students do not make A’s. All “A students” don’t always make A’s. However, they seem to have the ability to take the right steps to get back on track. B’s show a good understanding of the work and should be considered very good if the student is showing effort Students should rework problems and make corrections on homework and quizzes; avoid making the same mistakes C’s show some difficulty with the work in 7 th grade. Students should look for strategies to improve their scores such as the following: Reread the material or notes on the subject Rework problems or sentences or maps… Attend extra help with the intention of working with the teacher or a recommended student Look for common mistakes among the quizzes or homework
