LEAD21 Unit 6: Growing Up Week 1 Day 4

Extend the Theme Theme Question: How do living things grow and change? Focus Question: What do living things have in common? How does classifying living things help scientists? What are some living things in our community? Give examples of how some plants and animals in our community change and grow?

Extend Theme Vocabulary survive energy survivalsurvivor What is the same about survive, survivor, and survival? -al can mean “the act of” -or can mean “one who” The survival of the bird depended on the food it caught. The survivor of the accident had a broken leg. energeticenergize What is the same about energy, energetic, and energize? -etic means “full of” -ize means “to fill with” I feel energetic when I wake in the morning I will energize myself by eating good food.

Making Inferences -Putting together ideas from the text and the reader’s background knowledge to fill in gaps in the text. - Let’s look on page 7. In the text the author writes that plants grow up, down, and out. I think about plants I have seen. Plants can get taller, send their roots deeper into the ground, and get wider and bushier. Making a connection to the world helps me make an inference about what the author means.

Use Text Evidence PagesQuestionText Evidence 7 How do living things grow and change? The text says that living things need water, food, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The idea that living things grow and change when they have these three things answers my question. 8 What is this page about? What reasons does the author give for why living things move? 11 Which part of the chart gives facts that support the idea that living things grow and change? The chart gives information about animals with backbones. It doesn’t give information about insects. What inference can you make about insects?

Word Study: Compound Words Larger words made up of smaller words Example: Backbone- It means the string of bones that is in an animal’s back. guardbacksauce packtanhair homecutsun workapplelife Choose 2 words from the box below to make compound words. Then create a sentence using the word.
