1 Warm Up #66 How would you define government(s)? Objective: Students will complete a comparative chart and advantages/disadvantages chart about each government system. Tasks/Agenda: 1. Warm Up 2. Different Types of Government Notes 3. Introduction to Governments Homework Report Cards Signed!

2 Government An organization set up to make and enforce rules for a group of people. It enforces rules, provides services, and in most cases protects the rights of citizens.

3 Representative Government/ Parliamentary Gov./ Democracy Citizens vote for people to represent their views. The Reps. Then go on to make laws. If the people get tired of the old representatives, they can vote for new ones.

4 Monarchy Government headed by a ruling family. The people don’t get any power System set up to control land and resources

5 Theocracy A religious leader or organization leads the country People have little to no rights, but they don’t need them because the country is doing what God wants

6 Oligarchy Small group of people who control the government. These people are usually very wealthy or have control of the military

7 Dictatorship An individual person holds complete power. NO RIGHTS FOR ANYONE!!!!!!

8 Communism All political power and economy is controlled by the government. Everyone is equal.

9 Fascism A police state People are manipulated through fear to allow the government to act how they see fit. Personal rights are thrown out.

10 Socialism Government controlled economy People still get to vote and make the decisions Everyone is equal.

11 Warm Up: What countries were you surprised to find out about their form of government? Objective: Students will complete a comparative chart and advantages/disadvantages chart about each government system. Agenda: 1.Warm Up 2.Adv. / Disadv. Chart 3.Questions 4.Propaganda Poster – EXTRA CREDIT! Homework: FINISH ANY CLASSWORK NOT DONE!

12 Assessment: In Your Own WORDS write a complete sentence definition to explain each type of government researched: BE SPECIFIC! 1.Representative Democracy 2.Parliament 3.Monarchy 4.Dictatorship 5.Oligarchy Read the Following Quote - Answer the corresponding questions in complete sentences with LOTS of details and explanation. 6. “Democracy is the worst form of government on earth except for all the rest.” - Winston Churchill Explain the meaning of the quote. Do you agree or disagree with the author of the quote? Explain why. Give details and examples from your charts to support your answer.

13 Propaganda Poster - EC Choose a form of government EXCEPT A DEMOCRACY Draw a poster to “convince” people this is the best form of government that exists (use your advantages to help you) MUST HAVE A PICTURE AND A SLOGAN!! FOR EXAMPLE… Picture of Cuban Flag or small groups of people “Tired of relying on 375 people to make a decision… Come live in Cuba where we get things done!”
