5 CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM l ARTERIES:- high pressure distribution circuit. l VEINS:- low pressure return system. l CAPILLARIES:- exchange vessels. l It provides the muscles with a continuous stream of nutrients and oxygen so that energy output can be maintained at all times.

6 Blood supply to the heart The heart is a muscle which requires it's own supply of blood to function. It is supplied by the coronary arteries Unhealthy lifestyle causes narrowing of these arteries resulting in angina or a heart attack.

7 Arteries An artery contains a number of layers which give it strength. It is also elastic so it can even out the rise and fall in blood pressure with each heartbeat. The blood therefore flows relatively smoothly. With old age and lack of exercise arteries may become less elastic and this in part, may explain why blood pressure rises with age. Arteries branch into smaller vessels called arterioles which in turn, connect to the capillaries.

8 EFFECT OF EXERCISE qEACH heart beats a certain amount of blood = stroke volume qStroke volume can & does vary qThe number of heart beats a minute = heart rate qHeart rate can & does vary

9 qThe volume of blood pumped per minute = cardiac output qCardiac output always remains the same EFFECT OF EXERCISE

10 qAs you become fitter the amount of blood pumped with each beat (stroke volume ) increases and because more blood is being pumped the heart rate decreases i.e. lower pulse rate EFFECT OF EXERCISE

11 qWhen exercising you need more (O 2 ) and produce more (CO 2 ). qTo supply the above heart rate increases. qTherefore - unfit - out of breath, slowing down, stopping. qFit - train for longer before tired. EFFECT OF EXERCISE

12 HOW DO WE IMPROVE q22O - age x 65% to 85% = training H.R. during exercise q3 - 4 times per week qMinimum 20 - 30 mins per session q6 - 8 weeks for a training effect qMitochondria will significantly increase enabling the body to use more oxygen

13 WEIGHT LOSS qIf unfit or overweight then use :- qlong duration, low intensity exercise q60% M.H.R. for over 45 mins qHowever as fitness improves the individual should then begin to work (exercise) at a higher intensity
