1 What skills do digital natives need to function in the world today?
1. Solution Fluency 2. Information Fluency 3. Collaboration Fluency 21st Century Skills 4. Creativity Fluency 5. Media Fluency 6. Digital Citizen What skills do digital natives need to function in the world today?

2 If you are fluent in something….
“you have attained such a comfort level with it that its use is unconscious or automatic” (Jukes, McCain, & Crockett, 2001). The six basic categories of 21st Century Skills focus on skill fluency rather than just basic understanding.

3 The ability to problem solve creatively
1. Solution fluency

4 Defining an unknown chemical
Example of Solution Fluency

5 Example of Solution Fluency
Provide students with an unknown substance to investigate in lab. Students design an experiment to test the unknown and explore its melting point in order to properly identify the unknown. Perform the experiment and compare data with defined melting points of known substances found on iPod app. Example of Solution Fluency

6 The ability to find required information and determine the credibility of information
2. Information fluency

7 Famous Chemist Research project
Example of Information Fluency

8 Review proper search techniques.
Provide students with various search engines to be used when researching their famous chemist. Review proper search techniques. Allow use of netbooks and iPods to search for scholarly information. Example of Information Fluency

9 3. Collaboration fluency
Ability to work together to create digital products 3. Collaboration fluency

10 2001 Japanese tsunami and the nuclear crisis
Example of Collaboration Fluency

11 Example of Collaboration Fluency
Research 2001 tsunami and earthquake that affected Japan Create Using voicethread presenting specific information about nuclear crisis. Focus on radioactive elements. Collaborate Share voicethread with students in Japan. Allow them to comment about their first-hand experience. Example of Collaboration Fluency

12 Ability to demonstrate knowledge using imagination to create products
4. Creativity Fluency

13 Stoichiometry Jux Example of Creativity Fluency

14 Example of Creativity Fluency
“Juxio : from juxtaposition, the placement of 2 or more elements together to create new meaning” (Gibson, Younger W., Gormley, & Younker B., 2001) Students create a Jux on juxio.com to tell a story about the importance of stoichiometry in obtaining reliable lab data. Students are to base their story on a lab performed in class. Example of Creativity Fluency

15 Ability to decipher communication media and create media to effectively communicate a message
5. Media fluency

16 Chemistry brochure Example of Media Fluency

17 Example of Media Fluency
Students create a course description brochure to have on display at parent teacher conferences to communicate the content of the class. These brochures should include summary of individual course units. Example of Media Fluency

18 Students should be consistent and aware of who they are when establishing their digital selves
6. Digital citizen

19 My big campus discussion boards
Example of Digital Citizen

20 At the beginning of the trimester, students will be educated about acceptable language when posting on the class discussion board twice a week. Students will perform self-evaluation as well as evaluation of peers’ posts. Example of Digital Citizen
