3. 3 SGP Goal: Secure global environmental benefits through community action Objectives:  Build awareness and capacity of communities, CBOs, NGOs and CSOs  Promote a positive working relationship between civil society and various stakeholders especially government  Develop and disseminate knowledge to improve sustainable development practice and policy

4. 4 SGP projects are:  From planning grants of $2,500 to full small grants projects of up to $50,000  Grantees are local CBOs, NGOs, communities – international NGOs can be partners giving support but not grantees  Review and approval of proposals done at country level through the National Steering Committee

6. 6 SGP: Partnerships for Greater Impact  Create synergies, networking and linkages  Generate greater impact through replication, upscaling and mainstreaming  Ensure Government Support of GEF SGP Countries  Leverage Financial Support from Bilateral and Multilateral donor agencies  Seek Technical and Financial Assistance from partners

7. 7 Nile Basin: Integrating Local Actions into Regional Framework SGP Partnership with NTEAP: Practicing Integrated Water Resource Management Women making handicrafts from the water hyacinth Natural complementarities between a regional project and a locally driven program. The Nile Transboundary Environment Action Project (NTEAP) provides a regional vision and serves as a regional forum for community-based actions, while SGP serves as a delivery mechanism for local actions.

8. 8 COMPACT: Partnership with UNF/UNESCO for Conservation COMPACT seeks to demonstrate how community-based initiatives can significantly increase the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation in the co- management of globally significant protected areas by working to improve the livelihoods of local populations

9. 9 Partnerhsip with Bilateral Donors: Community Water Initiative People fetching water from safe water point Golinga, Ghana Community Water Initiative: promoting local livelihood in partnership with SGP Funding from governments of Luxemburg, Norway and Sweden and private foundations to enhance community access to drinkable water and sanitation in eight countries of Africa, benefiting more than 100,000 people Water tank under construction in Abdallah Dieri, Mauritania
