Aim: To determine the effect of Emotional Intelligence on sporting performance

Research hypotheses: There is a difference in EQ between sporting performers of different standards There is a link between Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and success in sport (Rugby Football Union)

Experiment 1 Experimental Hypothesis: Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is higher in elite athletes than in non-elite athletes (RFU players) Null Hypothesis: Any difference in Emotional Intelligence between elite and non-elite athletes is not significant and is due to chance

EQ score out of 7 Results: Graph to show the difference in EQ between elite and non-elite athletes

Experiment 2 Experimental Hypothesis: There is a positive correlation between Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and skill success rate in non-elite athletes (RFU players) Null hypothesis: Any correlation between Emotional Intelligence and skill success rate in non-elite athletes is not significant and is due to chance

Results:

Implications & Conclusions There is a positive correlation between EQ and performance in sport Increasing EQ would have a positive effect on performance EQ may be the difference in quality of performance between elite and non elite performers Emotional Intelligence may be utilised by performers to maximise their sporting success

Reliability & Validity Issues Self-report questionnaire; Self-efficacy Social Desirability Bias Confounding Variables

Main Challenges and How I overcame them: Finding a test for Emotional Intelligence Obtaining the tests Willingness of Participants Little research into EI in sport

My Resources Books Internet Journals Articles Dr. K. V. Petrides via email

What did I learn? Emotional Intelligence is measured as a quotient (EQ) There are various theories of EI. E.g. Trait Theory EI includes relation to others – socialisation Links between EI; neuroscience; neurolinguistic programming; mindfulness; etc.

Was I pleased with my finished result? StrengthsImprovements Hypotheses backed up by results Larger sample size Anomalous results could be explained Use the full TEIQue test Results coincided with theory and research Increased Timescale (experiment 2)

If I was to do this again, what would I do differently? Implement improvements on the previous slide Look more deeply into the effects of social interaction during performance
