2 Comparison of Incandescent to Fluorescent and Compact fluorescent bulbs 75 watts incandescent = 20 watt compact fluorescent Incandescent bulbs mainly use heat to produce light, which wastes energy Compact fluorescents use 90% less heat than incandescent bulbs Fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs are 4-6 times more efficient then Incandescent bulbs The difference between compact and regular fluorescent is the shape. 75 watts incandescent = 20 watt compact fluorescent Incandescent bulbs mainly use heat to produce light, which wastes energy Compact fluorescents use 90% less heat than incandescent bulbs Fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs are 4-6 times more efficient then Incandescent bulbs The difference between compact and regular fluorescent is the shape.

3 Fluorescents [left], Compact fluorescents [middle] and Incandescent [right] -Fluorescent bulbs: -Life of 20 watts: 8,000 hours -Initial cost of 20 watts: $4.99 -Cost of replacing bulb over 1 year: $4.99 -Percent of bulbs in Ansin Building: 100% -Percent of bulbs in Crocker building: 78.9% -Compact fluorescent bulbs: -Life of 20 watts: 9,000 hours -Initial cost of 20 watts: $6.24 -Cost of replacing bulbs over 1 year: $0.00 -Percent of bulbs in Ansin, and Crocker building: 0% -Incandescent bulbs: -Life of 75 watts: 1,002 hours -Initial cost of 75 watts: $0.89 -Cost of replacing bulb over 1 year: $7.78 -Percent of bulbs in Ansin building: 0% -Percent of bulbs in Crocker building: 21.06%

4 Crocker vs. Ansin Crocker has more incandescent bulbs. Ansin uses more energy. Crocker isn’t as bright as Ansin. Crocker has more incandescent bulbs. Ansin uses more energy. Crocker isn’t as bright as Ansin.

7 Vampire Electronics Vampire electronics are electronics that use energy even when we don’t think they are. Even though they are turned off, just having them plugged in wastes energy. At least every room in our buildings had one of these in its rooms. We need to be more aware of this problem and un-plug what isn’t being used Vampire electronics are electronics that use energy even when we don’t think they are. 8 Lighting Problems In areas in the Crocker building there isn’t much light where there needs to be. On the other hands many rooms in both buildings have too much light and we are wasting energy using it. In areas in the Crocker building there isn’t much light where there needs to be. 9 Recommendations In dark areas we need to increase the amount of light even if it means increasing energy usage Many areas in our school there was un- needed light in the rooms. We need to decrease energy usage in these rooms by decreasing voltage in these rooms We need to make sure we have only energy efficient lights in our rooms When we are not using the lights that we shut them off. 10 How Other Schools Are Helping Phillips Exeter started a challenge called the “Green Cup Challenge”. The challenge is a competition between different prep schools to see who could reduce there energy consumption the most. This challenge not only helped reduce energy for many schools, but it was a fun challenge all at the same time. We could start this challenge, or come up with some of our own Phillips Exeter started a challenge called the “Green Cup Challenge”.
