Combining Literature and Art Project August 1 – August 5

Objectives To enrich students’ comprehension of a literary work through careful reading and analysis of selected key scenes eighty percent of the time. To have students recognize how arts media can be integrated into literature studies ninety percent of the time. To acquaint students with masterpieces of world art. To reinforce education through the use of technology, specifically through searches of selected internet sites and proficient use of software fifty percent of the time. To apply the students’ research to a collaborative presentation in front of the class and have the audience remember 70% of the presentation. Using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint the students will constitute how planning works into a presentation

Premise The premise of the activity is that each group will be posing as a publishing team working to create their own book of great literature and art (including five different connections). You will be presenting your book selections at the end of the week. Five students to a group

Find Your Book Find a great book that your entire group has read and start selecting five scenes to work with. Examples of Great Books Metamorphosis by Faulkner Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Hamlet by Shakespeare Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen And many many others

Scene Guidelines To find scenes out of the book, look in the library or online You need to write this down for every scene. 1.Identify dominant sensory images in the scene. That is the descriptions that use of the senses. Make sure to note key visual elements. 2.Be sure that you can describe the mood or tone of the scene. Use three or four vivid adjectives (like the ones we went over in class last week) to describe this tone. 3.Select five to ten words directly from the text which your group believes embodies the scene. 4.Select three colors that you feel determine the overall feel of the scene.

Matching Art Side: Manhattan 1932 Georgia O'Keeffe Bottom: Among the Sierra Nevada, California; 1968; Albert Bierstadt

Art Select Art that comes from Each century 1600 1700 1800 1900 2000 Make a connection with your scene using the scene guidelines and write this down
