OCTOBER IS ENERGY AWARENESS MONTH! How much energy did you use?

Similarities? Differences? *Hint: think type of resource

CORNELL NOTES Write what is in yellow!!

What is Traditional Energy? Burns fossil fuels which produces large amounts of air pollution (carbon dioxide). Produces large amounts of electrical power –Many believe that conventional technology is the only way to produce enough electricity for us all.

What is Alternative Energy? Uses the natural world & its resources Usually does not create air pollution (only in small amounts) –At present only provides small amounts of our electrical power –Research to discover new methods & uses

Sources of Energy Traditional Energy The use of conventional technology to produce electrical power normally results in pollution that affects everyone. It often relies on the burning of fossil fuels that produce dangerous gases that often end up in the atmosphere. People and animals breathe in the polluted air and plants absorb the pollution. Large amounts of electrical power can be produced through the use of conventional technology. Because of our large towns and cities and large populations many believe that conventional technology is the only way to produce enough electricity for us all. Alternative Energy Alternative energy is normally produced by harnessing the natural world around us and the elements. Usually it does not create pollution in the atmosphere or at least it only produces small amounts. At present alternative energy only provides us with small amounts of electrical power and much investment is required to increase the amount of electricity produced in this more natural way.

Left-Side Item On your copy paper, draw the following table, leaving enough room for you to write in information in each box. You will have 5 minutes with each type of energy to fill in the correct information. Study up on the players, so you can make a good draft pick! THIS WILL BE GLUED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR NOTEBOOK!

Stations Each group member is assigned a number, read the articles that have YOUR NUMBER! When your group is finished, ALL 9 articles, with the paper clip, must be stacked in the middle of your table.

 YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES TO FINISH THE ENITIRE TABLE!! Energy Source ReaderDescriptionRenewable or Nonrenewable AdvantagesDisadvantages Wave Power Petroleum/Oil Nuclear Fission Natural Gas Solar Biomass Geothermal Coal Wind

What are the different types of alternative energy? Hydroelectric (wave) power Nuclear Fission Solar Biomass Geothermal Wind

What are the different types of nonrenewable energy? Coal Petroleum/Oil Natural Gas

What is Geothermal Energy? Heat from within the Earth’s core. Renewable energy Advantages: Reduces reliance on fossil fuels. Disadvantages: not widespread; expensive to install; reservoirs can run out of steam; sites may be release poisonous gas.

What is Biomass? Burning organic material made from plants and animals. Renewable energy Advantage: does not use fossil fuels, less air pollution; reduces the trash that must be buried in landfills. Disadvantage: may result in more air pollution; can be difficult to dispose.

What is Solar energy? Produced by capturing the sun’s rays (solar radiation) that reach the Earth and converting it into energy. Renewable Advantages: does not produce air pollutants or carbon dioxide; free Disadvantages: amount of sunlight is not constant; large surface area to install solar panel; expensive to install.

What is Wind Energy? Unequal heating of Earth’s surface by the sun produces wind energy; uses turbines Renewable Advantage: very clean source of energy Disadvantage: unpredictable; must be a certain speed; visual impact

What is Wave Power (hydroelectric)? Falling water powers turbines to produce electricity. Renewable Advantages: produces clean electricity; no waste or pollution; free after building. Disadvantages: limited lifetimes; availability of suitable sites

What is Natural Gas? Remains of plants and animals decayed and built up in thick layers Non-renewable Advantages: cleanest burning fossil fuel; contributes little environmental pollutants; safely stored Disadvantages: leaves out large craters within the Earth; harms ecosystem; highly volatile

What is Petroleum/Oil? Formed from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago Non-renewable Advantages: usefulness in making products; easier to get out of ground; easy to transport Disadvantage: release large amounts of carbon dioxide; running out; failing to discover new reserves; wars over oil

What is Coal? Most abundant fossil fuel formed from heat and pressure transforming plant material over millions of years Non-renewable Advantages: most abundant fuel; inexpensive Disadvantage: environmental damage; releases the most carbon dioxide

What is Nuclear Fission? Splitting of the uranium atom Non-renewable Advantage: does not produce air pollution or carbon dioxide; very little fuel is needed to produce large amounts of energy Disadvantage: extremely expensive; radioactive waste

NAME THAT ENERGY SOURCE!

I am a renewable source of energy that converts the sun’s radiation into other forms of energy.

I am a renewable source of energy made by burning garbage, wood, crops, landfill gases, or other organic material made from plants and animals.

I am a nonrenewable source of energy that takes millions of years to make, from the decayed remains of dead plants and animals. Methane is my main ingredient.

I am a renewable source of energy create by using turbines, although some people think my turbines are not visually appealing

I am a nonrenewable source of energy and I can be used to make several other products such as detergents, paints, and fertilizers. I have to be pumped from deep under water and because I’m so rare, I am often a reason for the start of wars.

I use the heat from within the earth to harness energy, and most of my reservoirs are found around the Ring of Fire

I am the most abundant fossil fuel.

I am a renewable type of energy that uses dams. Although I produce very clean energy, my dams have a finite lifetime and the availability of locations to build more is limited.

A disadvantage to using me is that if a meltdown occurs, I can have very harmful effects on human health and the environment. However, since I use uranium, I don’t emit any air pollution or carbon dioxide.

Many are concerned with the environmental impact that strip-mining and underground mining for me may have.

What do you do before you make your predictions for a bracket???

Exit Ticket 1.What are two differences between traditional and alternative energy sources? 2. List 1 traditional energy source -include 1 benefit & 1 cost 3. List 1 alternative energy source -include 1 benefit & 1 cost

Energy Poster! With your group, you will each make an informative poster to present to FOX NEWS which compares and contrasts traditional energy. It must include: –Title –Drawing –Names of Energies –2 Pros and 2 Cons of each energy –Your personal opinion of what energy we should use and why (at least 4 sentences to support your claim –What you plan to do to advertise your energy
