Mobile-learning

Definition Mobile learning perspectives Mobile technologies Reasons for using mobile devices

Mobile learning: definition Mobile learning is currently ill-defined. Some definitions focus on the mobility of the learner.

Mobile learning perspectives Techno-centric: M-learning is using a mobile device for learning Relationship to e-learning: Mobile-learning is part of e-learning. Augmenting formal learning: Formal learning is face-2-face learning. Learner-centered: Focus should be on the mobility of the learner and not the mobility of the device. Augment: to add some- thing to (something) in order to improve or complete it. Portable device: A portable device is any device that can easily be carried. Portable devices are becoming an increasingly important part of personal computing as the capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and smartphones continue to improve. A portable device may also be called a handheld device or mobile device. Wearable device: A wearable device is a digital device that is strapped to or carried on a user's body.

Mobile technologies Mobile technologies can be classified using two dimensions. Portable devices Shared devices Kiosks Personal devices Static devices Video conferencing Electronic whiteboards Classroom response systems Mobile phone Tablet PC Laptops PDA’s 1 2 3 4

Mobile technologies Quadrant 1: Contains portable devices. These devices can be taken from place to place. Quadrant 2: Contains Less portable devices. These devices can only be used in one location. Quadrant 3:Contains no physical moveable devices. The learner is mobile. Quadrant 4: Generally not classified as mobile technologies. 7 Reasons for using mobile devices Mobility: Learners can take part in class activities without the constraints of space and time. Versatility: Can be used for multi-tasking. Learning tools provide support to students in learning activities. Noise-free devices: Devices offer touch-screen options. The result is an environment which reduces noise. Interactivity: Devices help learners learn in an interactive way. Flexibility: Various apps allow students to learn in an adaptable environment. Social media networking: Allow students to interact with fellow students. Allow learners to instantly get feedback from teachers.
