TC Vision The technical committees of the CPMT should serve as a forum to catalyze innovation amongst the membership resulting in the commercialization of new electronic products to make life better and safer for us all

TC Strategy Serve as globally acepted #1 resource for technical information in our defined TC areas Make state of the art information available to all our membership through internationally attended and located symposia and technical workshops and TC web pages Gather and submit state of the art papers for our journals serve as source of expertise for distinguished lecturer list and peer review journals TCs should work together to tackle multidisciplinary problems

Interactions with ECTC TCs made course suggestions for Larry Mann Some Personnel Integration achieved Plenary Scession from Tech VP now std. 2001 Plenary Scession "Packaging Technology for Pentium 4 Processors" - VK Nagesh, Intel "integration of Passives in the 21st Century" John Galvani - AVX "Advanced Packaging Technologies in the Mobile Internet Era" T Ogawa - Matsushita Electric

2002 Plans Insure TCs are involved with all CPMT supported meetings. Summit at ECTC between Morris “meetings “ group and TC Chairs. Continue to upgrade TC chairs and web pages Actively upgrade linkage between journals reviewers and TC membership Special edition of CPMT journals or IEEE Spectrum with “state-of-the -art “ submissions by TC Chairs

2002 ECTC Plenary Lectures "Laminate Packaging for the Athalon Microprocessor" - Dr. Raj Master - AMD "The Future of Personal Area Networks" - Dr. William Olson - Motorola "Polymers in Opto-electronics" - Dr. Christopher Erben - Lucent Due to travel cutbacks we will be supporting travel and 1 nights hotel for Erben on VP Tech budget

Requests from or about TCs Request to form TC for Optical Systems Performance - Ephraim Suhir

Mission Establish and maintain state-of-the-art Technical Committee on Optical Systems Performance to address versatile needs in, and aspects of, this area of engineering. The emphasis will be on the mechanical and optical short- and long-term reliability of photonics and optoelectronics materials, components, devices, packages and structures, as well as on the analysis, prediction and optimization of the performance of large telecommunications systems. Such systems typically contain both hardware (photonics, optoelectronics, microelectronics, computing and other devices, components and subsystems) and various types of software. The ability to understand, analyze, predict and improve the operational availability of such systems is of tremendous importance and challenge.

Scope The Committee will address all the aspects of the materials, structural and optical reliability of the present and future photonics systems, as well as “reliability” (predictability, consistency) of manufacturing processes in photonics. Special attention will be dedicated to the prediction and, if possible, optimization of large telecommunications systems, containing photonics and optoelectronics components and subsystems, as well as to the role and performance of the software and its interaction with hardware, as far as reliability (dependability, mean-time-to-failure, maintainability, availability, repairability, etc.) is concerned. This will provide the necessary knowledge base for the rational design and optimization of photonics systems of the future, having in mind both physical and statistical (probabilistic) aspects of the reliability. This includes materials selection, structural design, packaging, fabrication technologies, testing methods, and other fields and directions in photonics engineering. Special attention will be dedicated to new directions, technologies and approaches, i.e. to directions and technologies that are expected to make a significant difference in the functioning and reliability of the system The Committee is thought to be unique in its area, and will occupy a special and important position within the engineering community, with activities addressing both basic science and innovative engineering research. It is intended that the Committee will bring together industry, academia, and business know-how.

Activities Conduct Optical Systems Performance workshops/conferences on the bi-annual basis (once in two years) Organize short courses, tutorials, invited talks, overview lectures, summer schools, etc. hosted by the Committee for the IEEE CPMT members; these will be run prior to the conferences and/or as separate events Publish papers, book chapters and overviews in the field of the Committee activities Regularly publish information about the Committee activities in the CPMT Newsletter
