1 Persuasive Writing

2 How would you persuade someone to do…. ( or not to do ) something?

3 When writing something which is intended
to persuade, there are several important features to remember.

4 FIRST….. ALWAYS REMEMBER—
YOU WANT TO CONVINCE YOUR AUDIENCE TO DO SOMETHING …BE CAREFUL NOT TO WRITE ABOUT HOW TO DO SOMETHING….

5 YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR ESSAY TO SOUND LIKE A COMMERCIAL.
SECOND… YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR ESSAY TO SOUND LIKE A COMMERCIAL.

6 Checklist For Persuasive Writing Format
Opening paragraph must have a statement of the issue being addressed. You want to be clever! You also must state your position on the issue. Main body of text contains the arguments ( you will need 3-arguments -- that means that the body of your essay will have 3 paragraphs, each one will have an argument with support and facts) that are elaborated with reasons and evidence. End with a summary paragraph. Call your audience into action, remind them what they need to do!

7 Persuasive Words and Phrases
Try to use some of these words and phrases in your writing. Remember to write in a forceful manner. You want people to agree with you! I am writing to... I am speaking to you today because... I have heard a rumour that... This needs to be dealt with We can do without this... It will ruin our quality of life. How unfair! Now... Surely... Obviously...

8 How could you (we) possibly… Do you want to be part of …
Of course... We can solve this by... Local people feel that... I believe that... This will mean that... This will cause... Another thing... A friend of mine says... Just think about... If these plans go ahead.. How could you (we) possibly… Do you really think … What would happen if… Is it really worth … Do you want to be part of …

9 Additional Language Features
Use mainly the present tense.

10 MORE … Language Features
Use emotional language that creates VOICE-POWERFUL VERBS-ADJECTIVES.

11 Use Rhetorical Questions
( THINK ABOUTS) You do not want a verbal response, you want your reader to ponder/wonder

12 Dare the Reader to Disagree
THIS IS WHERE YOU USE YOUR ARGUMENTS AND FACTS

13 Try to make opinions sound like facts.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST… Try to make opinions sound like facts. Otters are very caring animals as you can see here—they are holding hands.. ACTUALLY…

14 Task Read the following text, looking for the elements of persuasive writing which we have outlined.

15 Calling All Sleepyheads (INTRO PARAGRAPH)
Sleep is important. Nobody fully understands why we need it, but scientists think that the body uses the time to recover and to repair damage. When we fall asleep our heart and breathing rates slow down, muscles relax and our senses rest. If this is the case, are you giving your body enough rest?

17 BODY OF THE ESSAY Lack of sleep means that the body and brain do not work properly. If you don’t go to bed at a reasonable time, you will be sleepy in class and not learn so much. Tiredness means you may not be able to think clearly, and you may also be a DANGER to other people. ACCIDENTS can happen! You will lack ENERGY! Even playing and hanging out with your friends can become too much of an effort. Is staying up late really worth it?

“Early to bed and early to rise, makes us healthy, wealthy and wise.” Next time you start to argue about your bedtime, remember your body needs a break.
