The OREO Process O = Opinion R = Reasons E = Evidence/Examples O = Opinion (again)

Persuasive Phrases I am writing to.. We can solve this by… I believe that… What would happen if… Do you realize… I challenge… A friend of mine says… Are you interested in… If you continue to think this way,…

A Sample Opinion Opinion: I believe that all students should wear uniforms. Not an Opinion: I want to work on making our playground better. (This is a STATEMENT)

What does Persuade Mean? A means of convincing people. – To buy a certain product – To believe something – To act a certain way – To agree with a point of view

What Examples of Persuasion Do You Know? http://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=QwRISkyV_ B8&feature=player_em bedded#t=97 http://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=QwRISkyV_ B8&feature=player_em bedded#t=97 What are they persuading you to do? Other Examples – A courtroom – Commercials on TV – Commercials on the Radio – Politics – Fundraising/Bake Sales, etc “Have It Your Way” – Burger King

Let’s Get Started! O: Opinion – State your thoughts and feelings about a certain topic. – Make sure you feel strongly enough to pick a side and stay with it!

Pick a Side School Uniforms- Yes or No? Installing a snack machine for students- Why or Why Not? Should I ride your favorite roller coaster? Why or Why Not? Cancel Recess? Why or Why Not?

KEEP GOING! R: Reasons – Now that you have chosen a side, give your reasons! – A good persuasive paper would have at least three reasons! Topic: School Uniforms: Reasons: 1. 2. 3.

NEXT! E: Examples – You now have your reasons for believing in your topic. – Give me examples of why I should agree with you. – WHAT SUPPORTS YOUR AGUEMENT!

What Could Your Examples Be? Use BIG names. – Former U.S. president Bill Clinton thinks that junk food should be taken out of vending machines. Logos – Facts, numbers and information can be very convincing! – Example: A Snickers bar has 280 calories and 30 grams of sugar. That’s not very healthy. Use Emotion! – Example: Your donation might just get this puppy off the street and into a good home. Relate to others. – Example: Believe me! I’ve been there before. I’m just like you.

LAST! O: Opinion – Restate your opinion – Remind the reader what your stand point is!

ARE YOU READY TO PERSUADE?
