What you told us you want to know

Research on learning suggests that students: 1.Need to master the details of content to be able understand content structure. 2.Need repeated exposure to lectures in order to master the content. 3.Usually organize new content in a more rigid manner than Instructors. 4.Benefit most when instruction provides for auditory and visual learning styles. What do you think the answer is?

Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education Encourages contact between students and faculty Develops reciprocity and cooperation among students. Encourages active learning Gives prompt feedback Emphasizes time on task Communicates high expectations. Respects diverse talents and ways of learning.

How Learning Works: 7 Research- Based Principles for Smart Teaching How does students’ prior knowledge impact learning? How do students organize content? What motivates students? How do students develop mastery? What kinds of practice & feedback promote learning? How do student development and class climate impact learning? How do students become self-directed learners?

How do the models converge?

What is scholarly teaching? Poll Everywhere results Basic answers: –Engaging in undergraduate and graduate education in a manner similar to how you engage in research for your discipline –Applying evidence-based strategies to enhance student learning

Teaching Integration Scholarship

The link between teaching, learning and research Good teaching is informed by subject discipline research –Teaching and learning are often structured around subject specific disciplines –The foundational body of knowledge for learning is largely developed through research activities such as research projects, publications, and involvement in a research community. Teaching is also informed by research into teaching and learning When this happens, teaching practice becomes scholarly

The process of scholarly teaching involves: Identifying the problem or opportunity Establishing a baseline of activity Reviewing existing practice Selecting an appropriate intervention Intervening, monitoring and documenting Evaluating

Scholarly Teaching Scholarly Teaching* Use effective instructional practices Guided by pedagogical research Incorporate disciplinary standards and guide lines *University System of Georgia policy on Evaluating Faculty, 4.7.2 Learner-Centered Teaching Engage students in active-learning Account for prior knowledge Organize content to facilitate learning and retention Promote motivation Ensure practice to mastery Offer prompt, targeted feedback Ensure a safe, accepting class environment Employ GSU resources that enhance learning Advancing Pedagogical Practices Reflect on feedback from students (SEIs, GIFT, minute papers) Analyze student error patterns Embrace technology that supports learning Document and share effective practices (e.g., SoTL)

Plan for the day Three break-out sessions Color-coded name tags Syllabus requirements and student learning outcomes

Calibrating your teaching for success Pre-surveys: accounting for prior student knowledge Effective early assessments The path from the small to large class Who are Georgia State students Establishing a class culture Goes here first

Active Learning & Student Engagement Engage students in active learning Organize content to facilitate learning and retention Promote student motivation Providing feedback Employ GSU resources that enhance learning Goes here first

Documenting student learning to advance your career Combining teaching and research to build success (and so you can be promoted!) Student evaluations of instruction—what to expect and reflecting on student feedback Documenting your teaching effectiveness Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Goes here first
