Learning About Mixtures BP: Oil Spill

Read & Journal Write the main idea of the article. List three supporting ideas or facts that interest you. Explain how you think an oil spill would relate to what we are learning about mixtures.

Oil Slick Oil slick: When oil initially spills into the ocean it accumulates on top of the water. This is because oil is less dense than water and it floats on top. Create your “oil slick” in the cup. Observe what happens. Describe and draw your results on your lab sheet. What type of mixture is this an example of?

Oil Mousse Oil Mousse: When oil is unable to mix or spread out due to the environment it becomes clumpy and gooey like chocolate mousse. Shake your “oil slick” in the cup. Observe what happens. Describe and draw your results on your lab sheet. What type of mixture is this an example of?

Oil Clean-up Your teacher will add a few drops of dish detergent to your “oil spill” cup. Observe what happens. Describe and draw your results on your lab sheet. What type of mixture is this an example of?
