Three Layer Density Experiment

Materials needed: Oil Cork Coin Water Grape Honey Tall Clear Cup

First, fill a third of the cup with honey.

Next, fill a third of the cup with oil.

After that, fill a third of the cup with the colored water.

Wait for all three liquids to settle.

Before we continue, what do you think a liquid is?

A liquid can move like water.

A liquid take the shape of its container.

Make a prediction with the coin
Make a prediction with the coin. Would the coin float between the oil and the colored water, or sink in the honey.

Each of the three liquids have different densities, making three separate layers.

I predict the coin will float on top of the water because the coin is ________________.

I predict the coin will float between the oil and water because the coin is ________________.

I predict the coin will float between the oil and honey because the coin is ________________.

I predict the coin will sink in the honey because the coin is ________________.

Drop the coin in the cup.

What happened?

Draw and write your results.

What were to happen if you drop a different coin?

Make a prediction with the grape
Make a prediction with the grape. Would the grape float between the oil and the colored water, or sink in the honey.

I predict the grape will float on top of the water because the grape is ________________.

I predict the grape will float between the oil and water because the grape is ________________.

I predict the grape will float between the oil and honey because the grape is ________________.

I predict the grape will sink in the honey because the grape is ________________.

Drop the grape in the cup.

What happened?

Draw and write your results.

The grape is not as

Make a prediction with the cork
Make a prediction with the cork. Would the cork float between the oil and the colored water, or sink in the honey.

I predict the cork will float on top of the water because the cork is ________________.

I predict the cork will float between the oil and water because the cork is ________________.

I predict the cork will float between the oil and honey because the cork is ________________.

I predict the cork will sink in the honey because the cork is ________________.

Drop the cork in the cup.

What happened?

Draw and write your results.

All three items (grape, coin, and cork) have different densities.

The most dense goes to the bottom and the least dense goes on top.

Comparing all three liquids, which liquid was the most dense? Why?

Honey was the most dense.

Water was more dense than oil but was less dense than honey.

Oil was the least densest.

Comparing all three objects, which object was the most dense? Why?

The coin was the most dense.

The grape was more dense than cork but was less dense than the coin.

The cork was the least densest.
