THE HEART

The Heart http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FKip-T7HwI4

The heart is divided into 2 parts. Each part is a pump, so the heart is a double pump. right side The right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen. left side The left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body for use. From the lungs From the body To the lungs To the body How the Heart Pumps Blood

1. 1.Blood leaves the right side of the heart via the pulmonary artery and goes to the lungs where it is oxygenated. 2. 2.It then travels back to the left side of the heart via the pulmonary vein. Pulmonary artery Pulmonary vein Body Heart Lungs Blood Flow around the Body - Top Loop http://www.kscience.co.uk/animations/heart.swf

3. 3.The left side of the heart then pumps the oxygenated blood around the rest of the body for use, via the aorta. 4. 4.Once the oxygen has been used, the blood becomes deoxygenated and returns to the right side of the heart via the vena cava. Vena Cava Aorta Blood Flow around the Body - Bottom Loop Body Heart Lungs http://www.kscienc e.co.uk/animations/ blood_system.swf Blood, heart & circulation\Circulator y system

Fill the gaps In pairs The heart is made of muscle and has four chambers, two on each side. The left side contains _________ __ blood and the right side contains _____ _______ blood. The left ventricle is __________ since it has to pump blood. Deoxygenated blood leaves the heart via the _____________. Blood returns to the heart via the __________. Blood is pumped away from the heart through_______. The blood picks up __________ at the lungs then it goes straight to the ________. The left side of the heart pumps _____________ blood. The right side receives _______________ blood. Body cells need oxygen to stay alive. Oxygen is carried in the ____________ to our _____________.

HANDOUT DIAGRAMS OF THE HEART AND ASK THEM TO LABEL ALSO, PASS ROUND MODEL AND ASK THEM TO LISTEN TO THE HEART USING STETHOSCOPES. HANDOUT DIAGRAMS OF THE HEART AND ASK THEM TO LABEL ALSO, PASS ROUND MODEL AND ASK THEM TO LISTEN TO THE HEART USING STETHOSCOPES.

TASK……. WRITE A DESCRIPTION OF THE HEART AND THE WAY IT WORKS. IN YOUR DESCRIPTION EXPLAIN WHY IT IS DIVIDED UP INTO 4 CHAMBERS AND EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM DURING EXERCISE – P116ALSO, DEFINE HEART RATE, CARDIAC OUTPUT AND STROKE VOLUME P120 WRITE A DESCRIPTION OF THE HEART AND THE WAY IT WORKS. 13 ANSWERS….. HEART RATE – BEATS/MINUTE HEART RATE – BEATS/MINUTE CARDIAC OUTPUT – STROKE VOLUME X HEART RATE. CARDIAC OUTPUT – STROKE VOLUME X HEART RATE. STROKE VOLUME – AMOUNT OF BLOOD PUMPED BY EACH HEART BEAT 85ML UP TO 130 ML. STROKE VOLUME – AMOUNT OF BLOOD PUMPED BY EACH HEART BEAT 85ML UP TO 130 ML.
