 Pros= efficient! This leads to competitive prices  Cons= land can become unusable and things such as soil erosion is increased (from increased production).  Increased co 2 emissions from transportation  Over depletion of resources (from greater demands)  Supertanker spills = bad (Exxon Valdez)

 Because of our physical geography, we cannot grow everything here. This leaves a surplus of some resources in one country and a shortage in others.

 Specialization  Complimentary  Location

That is the question.

 No interference from government  Prices reflect supply and demand. This determines where resources are sent  No taxes or trading barriers such as quotas between the countries that are trading  Allows faster and more business between those countries (benefiting them).

 Economists that wanted free trade thought this was the reason why certain places flourished economically (had lots of money).  Promoted peace (because countries were less likely to fight with each other if they traded with each other)

Job loss costs in transportation Working conditions Environmental impact

 The point of this debates is to get you to practice your critical thinking skills  Each debate will involve 2 teams of students (1’s are for Free Trade and 2’s are for Fair Trade)

 Even though you are given a trade which you might not agree with, you must use your critical thinking skills to come up with an argument anyway  Talk to your group (people with the same number) and use your article to finish your chart  You will have time to share your own opinion later in the class

 At first, all the 1’s will talk about their trade (Free Trade) and all the 2’s will talk about their trade (Fair Trade)  This will allow each side to come up with an argument which they will present to the other members of the group  You will have time to each take turns stating your case, and why your trade is better
