2  USA stayed out of the war till December, 1941; an example of isolationism  Japan wanted to take over an island that was located in the Pacific Ocean and was controlled by the USA  Japan's intent was to expand its empire in the Pacific Ocean, winning control of Southeast Asia's valuable natural resources  Japan viewed the USA’s growing naval fleet as a possible obstacle Facts

3  On December 7, 1941, without warning, Japan launched an air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii  Battle lasted 110 minutes; from 7:55am to 9:45am  This caused the USA to declare war on Japan and Germany  They formed an alliance with the Soviet Union (Russia) and Great Britain  Attack killed 2,403 Americans and sank or severely damaged 14 warships and 347 aircraft (Coyler et Al)  Japanese lost 65 men Facts Continued…
