3 Facts about Pearl Harbor  Pearl Harbor was on December 7, 1941  2,343 men died, 1,272 were wounded and 960 were left missing  4 battleships were sank 1 was capsized and another was ran aground in “battleship row”

4 Facts (Cont’d)  11 other ships were sunk and 188 planes were destroyed  Only 29 Japanese planes were shot down and 5 midget submarines were lost

5 Facts (Cont’d)  The Japanese fleet contained about 353 planes in two waves  A third wave was called off  Aircraft carriers the target of the attack were all not at the base  The reason why the third attack was called off

6 Facts (Cont’d)  The Japanese only attacked ships at Pearl Harbor and planes at Hickman airbase

7 Facts (Cont’d)  Franklin Roosevelt the president at the time declared 12/7/41 as a “a day that will live in infamy”  The United States declared war on Japan the very next day December 8, 1941

8 Facts (Cont’d)  Germany and Italy declared war on the United States after that  The United States then declared war on Germany and Italy on December 11, 1941

9 The attack  The attack occurred on a Sunday, while everyone was off-duty  Everyone was caught completely off-guard  The navy did have radar but it was expecting friendly planes coming through  The navy also discovered a midget submarine washed up on the shore, but did not think much of it
