1 AVID 11 Ms. Shope 30 April, 2012 We will go to the computer lab. Expectations: 1) Check grades- signatures needed for D’s or F’s 2) COLLEGE in COLORADO- Find THREE colleges that interest you Find information for FIVE things about each (location, # students, cost, admissions requirements, other?) FIND the ESSAY PROMPT required for admissions! 3) Meet with Ms. Meredith one-on-one to go over your college essay. IF YOU HAVE NOT GIVEN MY YOUR COLLEGE ESSAY, YOU MUST DO SO TODAY!!!

2 objectives Students will check grades and research colleges. Students will work independently on computers.

3 announcements NEXT tutorial– Wednesday, May 2 make sure you have a TRF NEW THIS WEEK– LATE FORMS WILL earn HALF CREDIT for pre-work points. Complete the TRF BEFORE class and bring GOOD QUESTIONS!!! NEXT BINDER CHECK-- SOCIAL STUDIES, May 4! Volunteer Hours Each students must document 16 volunteer hours for the year. Bring a note stating the date, number of hours worked, what you did and signed by the supervisor of the activity with a phone number.

5 AVID 11 Ms. Shope 1 May, 2012 TIMED WRITING-15 minutes answer the prompt: What single adjective do you think would be most frequently used to describe you by those who know you best? Briefly explain. (Stanford) Write a well written paragraph response.

7 Sample College Essay THINK– silent 1) SKIM the essay. 2) CIRCLE any words that are unfamiliar or if you don’t know the meaning. 3) Read the questions at the end- the “prompts”. Circle key verbs– what are you asked to DO? Underline key information you need to find.

8 charting the text Use the handout to help us determine what the author is saying and also what the author is doing. Do paragraphs 1 and 2 together. Try paragraphs 3 and 4 on your own. THINK- silently PAIR– chat with a partner SHARE- class discussion

9 continue charting chart paragraphs 10 – 13 THINK- PAIR- SHARE Now go back and answer the questions

10 reflection How did charting the text help you respond to the questions? In what other settings could you use this strategy? What is easy? What is still confusing?

12 objective Students will review Cornell note taking principals and work collaboratively to answer content class questions. Students will present, question and take notes in their tutorial groups.
