NATIVE PEOPLE FIGHT BACK

 In 1961 President Lincoln was busy with the Civil War, but he was also concerned about the Indian problems in the West  He established the Uintah Valley Reservation for the Utes  The land there was described as “unsuitable for farming,… [useless] except for nomadic hunting grounds for Indians  A reservation is a piece of land set aside for the use of an Indian tribe  The Utes went from living on a land that was about 45 percent of Utah to land the that was 9 percent of that area RESERVATIONS

UINTAH VALLEY RESERVATION

 The Shoshone Indians in the North saw many immigrants and travelers as enemies  Many travelers shot and killed friendly Shoshone  In response some bands of Shoshone began to raid wagon trains  Settlers in the area demanded for something to be done  “It is quite time that something was done to teach the savages a severe lesson… Colonel Connor’s boys have been spoiling for action, [it] would be a wise plan to let them vent a little of their pent up fighting spirit”  Colonel Connor planned an attack after some Shoshone attacked Salt Lake City miners  He intended to take no prisoners BEAR RIVER MASSACRE

 Connor and his men slaughtered 300 men, women, and children  They also burned down the teepees  What is some bias you can see in the picture?

 Shoshone leader saw that there was only one way for his people to live with the white settlers  He joined the LDS Church and encouraged others to do the same AFTERMATH

 This war was the longest and most destructive in the Utah Territory  Brigham Young and a federal Indian agent met with leaders from many different bands in hopes of signing a treaty  The treaty said that the Indians would give up their land and move to the Uintah Reservation  The federal government did not agree to the treaty  Black Hawk saw how his people were being treated and were not receiving their promised compensation  He and many other Ute, Paiutes, and Navajos began raiding Mormon settlements THE BLACK HAWK WAR, 1865-68

 White settlers began attacking Indian villages, killing everyone they could  The government never conducted investigations for the murders  Eventually Black Hawk signed a treaty and moved to the Uintah Reservation BLACK HAWK WAR
