Lesson Essential Question: What is author's purpose, and how is it conveyed in a text? Warm Up: Set up your notebook page and read the paragraph on pg. 114 under "Does nature demand respect?" After you read, complete the "Quickwrite" activity underneath. Rebubble scantron with both student id# and test id #

3 Turn in your Literature book to pg. 115 Let 's read over the "Text analysis" and "Reading Skill" sections together.

4 Text analysis: Narrative nonfiction Define memoir - when a writer tells a true story What are 3 literary elements commonly used in both memoirs and fiction? 1. conflict - the problem or struggle between characters 2. suspense - curiosity about what will happen next 3. imagery - words or phrases that appeal to your senses

5 Model the skill: narrative nonfiction Read the following passage... I was lost in the woods. It was getting dark, and I was starting to shiver. I had to stay calm and find the path back home. Identify both an external and internal conflict. External - Internal - How does the conflict create suspense?

6 Reading skill: identify author's purpose Define author's purpose - a writer's main reason for writing What are 4 common types of author's purpose? 1. to explain or inform about a topic 2. to share thoughts or feelings about a topic 3. to persuade people to think or act a certain way 4. to entertain

7 Model the skill: identify author's purpose Read the following passage... People take nature for granted. Yet, think about how drab our world would be without healthy forests, sparkling oceans or brilliant skies. We need to take steps to reduce pollution before the beauty of nature is just a memory. What is the author's purpose? to persuade What would the author's purpose be in an encyclopedia article? How about in a humorous short story?
