4 What is an American? Unlike most nations, there are no racial, religious, or cultural aspects to our nationality. We are a nation of immigrants Immigration: 1.When people move from the country of their birth to America 2.Leads to a more diverse society During large waves of immigration, conflict often develops between new arrivals and natives as they compete for jobs

5 How do you become a citizen? Birth: 1.Anyone born in the U.S. or U.S. territories or bases is a “native- born” citizen 2.If either parent is a citizen, you are also “native-born” Naturalization A way for Legal immigrants to become citizens Naturalization Process: 1. Live here 5 years 2. Be able to speak, read, and write in English 3. Pass a test proving knowledge of US history and government 4.
