Pay Attention to Signs on the Door The media center will be used for testing throughout the school year. If the door, says “Closed to Passes/Classes” or “Stop, Do Not Enter, Testing in Progress” Please don’t enter. Testing in Progress

Go RED! JHS Media Center Respectful: Keep food and drink outside the media center. Place backpacks along bookshelves outside the computer areas. Engaged: Enter the media center quietly. Do not cut through the media center. Dedicated: Remain quiet for others to work. Please keep away from the circulation desk and doorways when waiting for dismissal.

What You Need to Know Enter/ Exit Signing in/ Signing Out No Food/ Drink Media Center staff does not give passes Have a pass from the teacher who assigned the work (especially to use the Internet) Returning Book/ Materials

Acceptable Use Policy An Acceptable Use Policy must be on file for a student to access the computer. A student and parent signature is required. Parents must indicate if the student is able to access the Internet. Acceptable Use Policies can be found on the district website and in the media center.

Circulation of Materials Books may be checked out for a two week time period. Reference books may be checked out overnight with media center approval. Students will be asked to pay the current cost of lost or damaged material. We ask that you pay for your lost/damaged book before checking out another.

Computer Usage Students are asked to sign in and out at the circulation desk when using the media center. Students are asked to have a pass from a teacher to use the Internet. All students with signed passes will be admitted to the media center unless the media center is full. Logging on: user name: last name, first name all lowercase no spaces, then your password (number assigned to you from Turner) *Don’t forget to log out*

Media Center Layout Circulation Desk: This area is used to sign in and out of the media center as well as checking out materials. Computer Labs: Classes who have signed up for using the labs have preference over students coming from study hall or advisory. Copy Machine: Students can use the copy machine in the media center. The cost per copy is 20 cents. (We can not make change) Student Tables: Students may sit two to a table to read or work quietly.

Materials Available Fiction: New and old fiction are located in designated areas of the media center clearly labeled. (arranged by author’s last name) Nonfiction: Arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System and author’s last name. Reference: Marked with an R and arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System. Most reference materials are not available for check out. (unless approved by a media center staff member) Biographies: Marked with a B and arranged according to the person’s last name. Magazines: A variety of magazines are available to read in the media center, but are not available for check out. Newspapers: The State Journal Register and Jacksonville Journal Courier are available for use in the media center.

Other Uses of the Media Center The media center is fortunate to display art work from the art department at JHS throughout the media center. (Be Respectful) The media center houses staff meetings, tutoring, board meetings, and special activities sponsored by all areas of the district. The media center is centrally located and an integral component in the educational programs of the school. Please be respectful when using the media center.

Computer Guidelines No email, chat rooms, and no messaging in order to comply with the board directed policy. Use the print preview under the file menu before printing larger documents. If the document is larger than 10 pages, see a media center staff member. Students are encouraged to purchase a flash drive to save papers, projects, etc.

Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Award Winners: Read books off this list to earn a Barnes and Noble gift card. See a media center staff member for more details.

OPAC-Online Public Access Catalog Visit our online school catalog found on the Jacksonville High School website. What’s Hot: This link gives information on the most popular books at JHS. Visit our links for online databases such as eLibrary and FirstSearch. Passwords and usernames can be given by media center staff members. (also located on posters in the computer labs)

Saving Documents Most computers in the building including the media center have Office 2007. We recommend you save your documents this way: Go to Save as: Save as a word 97-2003 document. If you plan on working on it at home and you don’t have Office 2007.
