Building Systems Integration Simple Integration with Universal Remote Control

Overview A simplest form of systems integration is the use of a “Universal Remote Control”. Some equipment is supplied with a universal remote. These work best with “like equipment”. 3 rd party universal remotes are often more flexible

I.R. plus R.F. Some remotes are able to send both I.R. and R.F. The R.F. is used for non-A.V. integration or extension beyond line-of-sight.

Learning Remotes Most universal remotes depend on a code database Some remotes have the ability to “learn” commands it doesn’t know Learning remotes will learn most modern codes, but some non-standard format codes may not work.

P.C. Programmable Remote Some more complex remotes are P.C. programmable These may have touch screens with the ability to create custom interfaces

Macro Programming Some universal remotes have macro programming abilities Macro’s can perform multiple sequential functions. For instance, a single push button could trigger a macro to issue power on to several devices, dim the lights, select the DVD input on the receiver, start the DVD playing and pre-set the volume level

Issues with Universal Remotes Because they are I.R. based, they have no feedback. Power on/off toggle is a confusion for users when macro’s are incorporated At least 1 manufacturer (Harmony by Logitech) has created a remote system with “synchronization” logic. If the system seems to be out of sync, it will prompt the user to adjust.

Issues with Universal Remote The more complex the customers system is, the more confusing the use of the universal remote can be Need to select device you wish to control sometimes confuses customer. For instance, when watching T.V., the volume up/down may control the T.V. but the customer really wants to control the receiver Some remotes provide “punch through” selection to solve this
