The Earth’s Surface Since 20 th January, we have been studying the earth’s surface, and the processes that shape the crust.

The Earth’s Surface During this period, we have learned: 1.That the earth is made up of layers. 2.Why the earth is shaped as it is. 3.What plates are and how they move. 4.What happens when plates separate or meet. 5.How to describe an earthquake (Japan, 2011) and a volcano (Mount St. Helens, 1980) that we have studied.

Activity 1 Work in pairs to complete the cloze test provided.

Activity 1 The layers of the earth consist of the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core. The crust is broken up into sections called plates. These move in different directions due to convection currents in the mantle. As a result, these plates collide and separate. When plates slide by each other and get locked together they eventually release, causing an earthquake. When a continental plate collides with an oceanic plate, one slides under while the other buckles upward forming fold mountains. Where tremors are sent out from is known as the focus, and directly above on the crust surface is called the epicentre. When plates separate magma flows onto the ocean floor resulting in mid ocean ridges.
