3 Course Materials Prescribed textbook:  “Fundamentals of Multimedia” by Ze-Nian Li and Mark S. Drew (Highly recommended by Prof. Chang) Other references:  Multimedia Communications: “Applications, Networks, Protocols and Standards” by Fred Halsall  Rafael C. Gonzalez, Richard E. Woods: Digital Image Processing. Prentice Hall; 2nd edition, 2002 Lecture notes will be available online

4 Course Materials We’ll cover most of the fundamental concepts using the book by Li& Drew Extra materials are included from other two reference books Toward the end of the course (last month), students are expected to present topics in more depth as part of the final project.

5 Lecture Format Learning should not be passive, but active I highly encourage students’ participation The more active you are in class discussion, the higher your score for class participation.

7 Course Outline Multimedia Data Compression  Lossless compression algorithms  Lossy compression algorithms  Image compression standards  Basic video compression techniques  MPEG video coding I --- MPEG-1&2  MPEG video Coding II --- MPEG-4,7&beyond  Basic audio compression techniques  MPEG audio compression

8 Course Outline Multimedia Communication and Retrieval  Computer and multimedia networks  Multimedia network communications and applications  Wireless networks  Content-based retrieval in digital libraries Each topic takes on average 1 lecture.
