working collaboratively to enhance mathematics teaching The NCETM Launch Conference 27 June

Excellence in Teaching Mathematics: personal journeys & partnerships through the NCETM Professor Celia Hoyles Chief Adviser for Mathematics

The path to NCETM: Some key dates March 2002 ACME CPD report accepted by SoS Charles Clarke & remitted to Adrian Smith as part of Post 14 Maths Inquiry February 2004 Post-14 Maths Inquiry Report published June 2004 SoS Charles Clarke welcomed report & took an active part in the development of response Nov 2004 Mathematics CPD Stakeholder Conference Dec 2004 Invitation to tender launched by SoS Charles Clarke Oct 2005 Procurement exercise completed & announcement made by Bill Rammell that Tribal Group plc with the Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching at Plymouth University will run NCETM... and now June 2006 launch of NCETM by SoS Alan Johnson

ACME's first proactive report CPD for Teachers of Mathematics why cpd? to reverse the downward spiral in maths -continuing mathematics to the age of 19 -qualifying for HE courses in numerate disciplines -training new teachers of mathematics -feeling engaged with mathematics at all levels “The students of today will become the teachers of tomorrow”

Background to ACME project A comprehensive review of CPD provision revealed -a shift away from longer accredited courses towards short course provision -a need to take stock & interconnect developments -a need to identify what is effective for different groups of teacher -a need to set in place a sustainable infrastructure for CPD

risks incoherence across provision need joined-up policy across sectors: Further Education/vocational, HE, transitions shrinking capacity of 'trainers’ diversity & potential rifts in community failure to stimulate the demand side i.e. lack of 'buy-in' by teachers & lecturers CPD interpreted as blaming teachers - something to be ‘done to’ teachers need CPD as a celebration of the work of teachers & recognition of the challenge in teaching mathematics

my personal cpd journey 4 critical areas & 3 critical incidents window on the potential of ICT window on students’ learning window on influences on student performance Skemp weekends falling in love with Logo street maths &........ support of my colleagues

37% of college students in error: 66% wrote 6S = P letters thought to stand for the objects influence of the underlying language & syntax where 6S suggests an adjective-noun structure meaning six students Students and Professors In a college there are six times as many students as professors. Translate this statement into symbols using S for the number of students & P for the number of professors.

overriding influence opportunities to continue to work on mathematics through for example tutoring & learning with Open University collaborative design of activities & microworlds: face to face & at a distance and......SPODE group my vision is that NCETM will provide opportunities for all teachers of mathematics to embark on their own personal journeys
