Structure of PharmD Programs Accreditation Curriculum at SIUE Class Demographics Admissions Pathways Pre-Pharmacy Curriculum Tips for Success Questions Overview

Structure of PharmD Programs The PharmD program is the only accredited entry-level program to practice pharmacy in the country. BS in Pharmacy is no longer offered. BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences is not a license to practice pharmacy. PharmD program formats: 0-6 or 0-7 programs (0 years + 6 or 7 years) +/- guaranteed admit to professional programs 2+4 programs (2 years + 4 years) +/- early assurance programs Accelerated year-round programs Non-traditional PharmD programs for those with a BS Pharmacy

Accreditation The SIUE School of Pharmacy was granted full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) in June 2009. ACPE authorized the following statement: The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 North Clark Street, Suite 2500, Chicago, IL 60602-5109, 312/664-3575; FAX 312/664-4652, website acpe-accredit.org.acpe-accredit.org In 2015, full accreditation by ACPE was extended for the maximum of 8 years through 2023.

Admissions Pathways Two pathways for admission into the SIUE School of Pharmacy Traditional pathway Early Assurance Program - Conditional Entry Program (CEP) Both pathways require the completion of all pre-pharmacy coursework before admission to the School of Pharmacy. Without dual credit coursework, requires at least 2 academic years to complete. Traditional Pathway College students complete all or majority of pre-pharmacy coursework and apply to the program. Rolling Admissions start a year before pharmacy school starts. (NEW) Encompasses the vast majority of all students in program. Conditional Entry Program (CEP) – Started fall 2013 High school seniors who meet the academic requirements for Meridian Scholars Program may apply for consideration. If accepted into CEP and achieve the academic requirements, the student will be admitted into the pharmacy program.

Traditional Pathway - Admissions Criteria Grade Point Average (GPA)  Overall cumulative GPA (cGPA)*  Pre-Pharmacy GPA (ppGPA)*  Pre-Pharmacy Math/Science GPA (msGPA)* PCAT (Pharmacy College Admissions Test) Letters of Recommendation Interview Writing Assignment * college-level coursework only

Begin the application process one year before you want to enter the School of Pharmacy Mid-July 2015 – PharmCAS applications available November 2015 – Last date to take the PCAT exam February 1, 2016 – Application deadline September 2015 – March 2016 – Interview/writing assessments September 2015 – March 2016 – Admissions decisions Early August 2016 – Semester begins Traditional Admissions – Important Dates

Remember, there are two years of pre-pharmacy coursework and students begin the application process one year before their intended start date in the pharmacy program. Example A student begins SIUE as a freshmen in the fall of 2015. She applies to the School of Pharmacy in the summer or fall of 2016. A decision on pharmacy admission is made in fall 2016 or spring 2017, but this admission is contingent upon her completing all pre-pharmacy courses by end of spring 2017 term. {NOTE: no summer 2017 courses} Upon successful completion, she begins the PharmD program in the fall of 2017.

Conditional Entry Program (CEP) Incoming freshmen who enter SIUE directly from high school will be presented the opportunity to earn a PharmD degree through the SIUE School of Pharmacy Conditional Entry Program (CEP) Students must first apply for consideration to the program as high school seniors. Once accepted, the students in the CEP will be required to successfully complete two years of pre-professional study, achieve pre-defined academic criteria, and meet both CEP and professional standards before being granted admission to the four-year professional PharmD program.

Conditional Entry Program Eligibility: All students who wish to be considered for the CEP must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the Meridian Scholars Program at SIUE: ACT ≥ 27 or SAT ≥ 1210 o Required for CEP consideration High school GPA ≥ 3.75 (standardized) or in top 10% of graduating class o Preferred for CEP but not required It is important to note that ineligibility for CEP does not imply that a student is not qualified for SOP admission. Other candidates for the PharmD program at SIUE are considered on a competitive basis through the traditional application process.

Conditional Entry Program Application Students must apply to the Meridian Scholars Program and indicate either pharmacy or pre-pharmacy as an area of intended study on the undergraduate admissions application. The deadline for application is December 1, 2015. On a competitive basis, candidates will be invited to apply and interview with the School of Pharmacy. Upon completion of all interviews, the top candidates will receive a formal invitation to participate in the CEP.

Conditional Entry Program Criteria All three GPAs (cGPA, ppGPA, msGPA) must be maintained at a minimum of 3.5. All enrolled courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Grades from repeated courses will not be used in computing GPAs. AP and dual credit courses may be applied towards the completion of the pre-pharmacy curriculum but AP grades will not be included in GPA, GPA or GPA calculations. The SIUE pre-pharmacy curriculum must be completed by the end of the second spring semester after entering SIUE as a freshman.

Conditional Entry Program All CEP participants must submit the requisite SOP application materials (all items required for the traditional application process) through PharmCAS using the published application process and timeline. All CEP participants must take the PCAT exam; however PCAT scores for CEP applicants will be used for tracking purposes only and will not figure into the CEP decision for PharmD admission. All students must successfully complete the on-site interview and writing assessment during the traditional SOP interview schedule. Upon meeting all academic and CEP program requirements, participants will be admitted to the PharmD program and will occupy the first seats in the upcoming fall SOP class.

CEP Admissions – Important Dates December 1, 2015 – Deadline for submitting Meridian Scholar and undergraduate admissions applications. Must indicate pharmacy or pre-pharmacy on undergraduate application. January 2016 – Invitations to submit supplemental applications for CEP consideration will be mailed. February 2016 – CEP candidates will be interviewed on campus. March 2016 – CEP decision will have been completed and successful candidates will be notified. Summer 2016 – CEP participants enroll in coursework at SIUE to start as freshman in fall 2016 Summer/Fall, 2017 – take PCAT and begin PharmCAS application August, 2018 – enroll in School of Pharmacy

CEP Considerations CEP does not have a “no compete clause,” a “contract that prevents you from exploring other opportunities” or “early commitment deadline.” It is in your best interest to explore all options. While CEP students must enroll directly from high school, dual credit and AP coursework may be applied towards completion of the pre-pharmacy program. Some early assurance programs require that the entire pre-pharmacy program be completed at the college/university regardless of prior coursework already performed.

CEP Considerations - Continued The pre-pharmacy coursework must be completed within two academic years but CEP does not mandate that the entire two years be used. If a CEP student decides to change their area of intended study (i.e., major), they only forfeit their CEP status and not their academic standing in the university.

Tips for Success Make scheduling choices that will enable you to make the best grades possible. Consider taking Organic Chemistry I in the summer prior to sophomore year to enhance success on PCAT. Pre-pharmacy curriculum at SIUE can be completed in 2 years but it must be planned in advance. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy has reported that increasing numbers of students enter pharmacy school with at least 3 years of college work. Some programs now require a BS degree prior to pharmacy program.

Tips for Success Continued Students often benefit from taking AP or Dual Enrollment credit in high school Take as many science courses as possible before taking the PCAT Try to get pharmacy-related experience Begin community/volunteer experiences with emphasis on health care environments
